Whats an appropriate fuel cost per mile?

My father, who I go and see 2-3 times a month, always insists on giving me a contrubution "for my petrol" and I was wondering what an appropriate rate was.

Obviously I am happy to visit but these are care visits as well and take up the whole day. He says he likes to help as he doesnt want to be a burden - I think he still sees me as a poor student despite being in my 40s and in a reasonable job!

The distance is around 80 miles each way (mostly motorway) and the journey takes 1.5-2 hours. My car is a standard hatchback and runs on diesel - probably in the region of 50 mpg. If say I am paying £1.70 a litre what sort of cost would this be for the 160 mile round trip?

Our car tells us how many miles per gallon he has used, it really varies on the type of car, roads and the type of driver you are. The figures you use assume 50 mpg, thats the one figure that’s your unknown but using the ones you have written those it’s £24.70.

the standard "milage rate" is 45p per mile - actual petrol cost per mile is lower than this but this rate factors in a per-mile allowance for wear-and-tear and maintenance. any amount lower than this that you are happy with is fine. if you accept a payment higher than this you may be contravening insurance policy conditions which usually specify "not for hire or reward" as you will be deemed to be making a profit, and if businesses give their employees a rate higher than this for their expenses claims, the difference is taxable as income.

It costs me about 70 to fill and I get about 700 miles out of my car. I basically cruise control it on motorways exclusively so I realise this is very good!... easy maths, 10p/ mile.

My wife gets about 400 out of her same sized tank with mostly city driving... so 17.5p/mile.

My sat dated pence per mile for work is 42p, that covers fuel, insurance, tax, wear and tear and also deprivation due to increased mileage on the car
