Dress Shopping Frustration.

Shopping for a ‘special’ dress used to be straightforward – take a trip to the nearest high street, visit your preferred shops, search through the rails, try on a load and buy the one you like best.

Now though, the high street has all but disappeared and the widest choices are all online.

I’m currently in need of a Mother-of-the-Groom garment (for September) and have looked at so many that I’m in danger of going dress blind.

Here’s my gripe: if you order one dress, wait for it to arrive, try it on, decide it’s doesn’t in fact suit you, return it, wait for your refund, order the next attempt, wait for it to arrive… It takes forever! But if you order a selection at you commit hundreds of pounds at once for the privilege of trying them on at home.

My DH is of the opinion that I shouldn’t order another until I’ve rejected the first. He also can’t understand why I don’t just go to John Lewis and get one. I’ve tried to tell him that even JLP is unlikely to have all the ones I’ve seen online, in my size. (And changing rooms when you are 62 and round are not fun.)

Not after any suggestions for a suitable dress – just wanted to rant quietly!

@rosegoldwatcher just do click and collect to deliver clothes to the store if your choice.

Honestly - Next is for all ages! They have lots of brands on their website. Roman, Phase Eight, Hobbs, Gina Bacconi - lots of typical brands for what you are looking for!

Pretty kitty has lovely dresses. They are only available online but I've never had a problem ordering or returning items.

@rosegoldwatcher next is like Argos for clothes .. or Littlewoods in old money !

They sell everything ! I work for them and the directory is what keeps them afloat! They sell most brands and millions of items !!

Get a account and order loads and return to store what you don't want ! No impact on your finances at all..

Literally our customers make a hobby out of it !! 🙄🙄

You could have a look at Little Wings, very flattering dresses and good quality. I wandered around Klass yesterday and they are worth a look. Lots of dresses that would be good for a wedding and again some great shapes.

I'm with you @rosegoldwatcher . I hate shopping online for the reasons you have already stated. I also like the instant gratification of finding something I like and buying it straight away.

Do you have a Boundary Mills near you? They do loads of wedding guest type clothes.

I am excited that I have been invited to not one but two weddings this year. Both weddings are so reasonable that they are not mumsnet newsworthy. One hen do is a £25 afternoon tea, and there have been no dress code stipulations or other unreasonable requests for either wedding.

Have you tried Nancy Mac?

As above poster, try Nancy Mac.

I had a great shopping experience at LK Bennett last year when looking for a special outfit. Huge dressing room, staff were great but it is pricey!!!! I loved it so much though that I ended up buying 2. They had quite a lot of A line dresses.

NerdyBird · 24/02/2023 09:13

Does it need to be a dress or could it be a skirt and top? Sometimes it's easier to get separates to fit properly.

jamnotconserve · 24/02/2023 09:15

Another vote for JL personal shoppers. They do the running round, you just sit in (big) changing room and they bring you nice things. No pressure to buy either.
