How many hours of driving lessons to pass?

DS1 and DS2 are both having driving lessons (£37 per hour here in London!). They do NOT have access to a car outside of lessons to practice in (ours is automatic and too high spec to insure them on). So how many driving lessons do people think they will each need? DS2 (17) is having 2 hours a week at the mo and DS1 (19) is only having lessons in uni vacations (but 4 hours a week in those).

Hmmm I only did 2 hours and passed lol and 1 of those was on day of test

DuchessOfSausage · 22/02/2023 19:51

@LilacLemur , I did that and failed. I was told they fail you because they think you've not had lessons.

KendrickLamaze · 22/02/2023 19:51

Back when I was a learner they said 50 hours or maybe it was 50 lessons so 100 hours plus outside learning.

I would be careful learning outside of instructed hours as that's where bad habits are picked up and not reformed. I did a lot of outside hours driving and generally drove like someone who had been driving years. That's why it took me four attempts to pass.

I did 10 hours in 2008, but I had my motorbike licence for 20 years before that. The instructor said I'd be able to pass, at the end of my 6th lesson. He just worked on getting a few things smoother, manoeuvres - such as increasingly tight parallel parks and reversing into minor roads.

I realise that I'm entirely atypical!

Okaaay 😂

I passed after 24 hours of lessons- no access to another car, but I was road savvy as I had a moped so didn't have to learn the road rules, just how to operate a car!

My DD passed last August and she had 1 hour a week and passed 1st time 7 months after turning 17 and had 30 hours with instructor. She did loads of practice in her own car as well though.

Child one 20 hours, child 2 36 hours. We got them a car to share while they were doing the lessons, and did a bit of driving with them outside the lessons. One did test in instructor's car and other in our car. One passed first time, other, second time. Most of their friends have passed first time. A few have passed second time. Very few seem to have taken more attempts

Absolutely consider buying the car now. I took lessons but did all the driving in my husbands Golf in our spare time, and subsequently took my test in it. Passed first time with 2 minors. Just check the car meets the DVLA requirements beforehand. I honestly believe I did all my real learning in my own car & my instructor was more for the finer detail examiners are looking for to pass you. It also made for a smooth transition once I passed as I knew the car like the back of my hand. Best of luck to them both.

30 is standard. Ds1 needed very few because Dh basically taught him, then I took him out, and then he had lessons and at the same time Dh and I also took him out, so he only needed 12 lessons.

I have taught all 7 dcs and dsc's .
They have A double lesson for their 17 birthday. Plus I insure my car with learner driver insurance.

They then practice and practice. Every time I go out and they are home they have to drive. They drove to school . To the supermarket, you name it they drove there.

They had a lesson once a week for 6 weeks. Meanwhile they took their theory .

They didn't all pass first time but 4/7 did. One took 3 attempts the others did it in 2 but the secret is practice.

We live in a very very rural area so I have a vested interest in making sure they can drive. It's a life changer for me and imho a very valuable life skill for them .

DS had 40 lessons, and practice in his little car and passed 1st time, instructor would only put him in when she thought he was ready, it suited us, for him to learn slowly. It’s something my parents did for me and I want to set both my DC up driving and their first car. They have to pay their insurance & maintenance from there on in though .
