People talking at cinema. Finally Said Something

Was at the cinema today to see The Whale, not that busy but there was a couple talking alot and after about half an hour I snapped and asked them to be quiet please and they actually did shut up!

I'm a quiet, anxious, people pleaser, won't say boo to a goose. But I'm so proud I actually said something, instead off sitting there seething and hope someone else said something.

Why do folks go to cinema and chat all the way through, how can they follow the film? Why not go to a cafe, bar or something.

I don't mind the odd chatter about the film but it was full on constant conversation. Don't folks realise you can still be heard, even if talking quiet.

Why are people so selfish these days and only care about themselves?

Good for you!

colourmebladd · 21/02/2023 21:53

👏👏
Cinemas really piss me off these days.

Cleebope2 · 21/02/2023 21:59

I always tell people to be quiet, then to shut up, then I just move seats. Can’t stand it. Even worse if it’s the theatre. Noone has ever shouted back at me. I must be scary! But I’m a teacher so I do it for a living. I wish more people would do it.

Beldam · 21/02/2023 22:03

Good for you. Chattering and eating food really puts me off going to the cinema.

I went to see Hamilton and the woman next to me was singing. She was foreign and pretended not to understand me. The usher intervened pretty quickly and put her straight !

Heartbreaktuna · 21/02/2023 22:04

Good for you! I bawled my eyes out through the whale. Two idiots were taking selfies at the beginning! Fortunately the cinema staff threw them out. So disrespectful

ColorOfFunny · 21/02/2023 22:09

What did you think of the whale? It looks a bit mawkish and sentimental to me.

ColorOfFunny · 21/02/2023 22:10

But we'll done for shushing

Hbh17 · 21/02/2023 22:11

Well done! I also ask people to stop talking, if necessary - I just wish I could also ask them to stop eating (vile habit in the cinema).

Wafflehouse · 21/02/2023 22:17

I hate the cinema now, it’s become an unpleasant experience. No one sits and just watches the film anymore, selfies all at the start, phones on all the way through, up and down constantly, chattering away throughout.

I used to like going to watch a film, for the experience as well as really wanting to see something but the last few times I’ve been I felt like I’ve turned up to someone else’s living room so now I just wait for things to be streamed and watch it at home 🙁

I really enjoy telling people to shut up at the cinema. 😂

QueefQueen80s · 21/02/2023 22:35

I'm a support worker amd take my people a lot, and one thing they have in common is their loud whispering. I do my best to get them to be quiet as it's annoying for me too and I'm conscious its disturbing everyone. So I'm grateful when someone else tells them to be quiet!
Don't be afraid to do it. Cinema should be quiet aside from reactions and eating.

I loved it!

Schnooze · 21/02/2023 22:38

Did it in the theatre and got a mouthful back ☹️

GCAcademic · 21/02/2023 22:42

Good for you. I’ve long since stopped going to the cinema thanks to the feral audience.

HedwigIsMyDemon · 21/02/2023 22:42

Eating in the theatre is even worse - really quiet play and some twat is eating popcorn behind you 🤬.

Why can’t people cope for a couple of hours without stuffing their face?? 😩

MsFogi · 21/02/2023 22:42

I've given up going to the cinema - it costs a fortune and is like playing Russian Roulette with whether or not you will be surrounded by people talking and/or munching and slurping. Theatre is starting to go the same way too sadly...

Yes this.
I sat next to a guy that itched himself all through the film. I still haven't got over it!

TheaBrandt · 21/02/2023 22:45

We had a group of 50 somethings who talked loudly through the whole film. Was in an arts cinema too. Dh asked them
politely to be quiet which they did for abit then started up again. So weird to get to that age and not know how to behave in a cinema! They were worse than kids.

signis · 21/02/2023 22:47

Well done 👏🏻. I think I'd be too cowardly to do it, though I admire those who do.

A woman at the theatre last year leaned forward and did a long 'shush' sound to the two men in front of her. It was during a ballet.

maslinpan · 21/02/2023 22:50

A friend of mine was very successful in shutting up people behind him at the cinema when he turned round and said, I haven't paid 10 quid to listen to your conversation.

Spectre8 · 21/02/2023 22:54

Good for gou. I do it all the time. Only one time had that person deliberately wait for me outside the screening to continue to tell me how dare I, I just simply said I feel sorry for your kids that your teaching them such bad habits and walked off. Probably way below the belt but seriously who does that waits to continue a fight with someone.

People are seriously lacking alot of manners lately, its just me me me.

TheaBrandt · 21/02/2023 22:56

I had a friend who said “enjoying your picnic?” to a serial cinema food scoffer whose rustling was very distracting which I found quite funny at the time!

Actually thinking about it I had to ask the young woman sitting next to me at the theatre to stop looking at her phone every few minutes it was extremely distracting. Total phone addict she seemed shocked but stopped doing it to be fair.

FightingFatAt49 · 21/02/2023 22:58

You're a lot more polite than I am. It's a good few years ago now, but went to the cinema once with DH and a group of teenage girls sitting behind us talked non-stop until I turned around and told them to "Shut the fuck up" - I'd really had enough.

signis · 22/02/2023 09:30

Agree with whoever said that it does put you off the cinema particularly, some treat it as an extension of their sitting room at home rather than a shared public place. I find those Everyman cinemas to be safer in that respect.

Sad that the theatre appears to be going the same way with a few people. Though with the price of tickets being so much higher tolerance levels are lower.
