My son has been around a child with chickenpox a couple of weeks ago. He now has some spots but they are not itchy - are chickenpox always itchy?!

DD's (9) weren't, she'd been vaccinated though.

When my son had them he didn't seem itchy or uncomfortable at all. Maybe some kids are lucky like that!

I think it normally is. His spots may start to itch as times goes on, but not quite sure. My 3's were all itchy so that's just my experience. Could be different though.

Omg my DD aged 2 came out in spots yesterday morning at the back of her knees. So far it's spread all down her legs, soles of feet, hands and bum. I took her to the pharmacy and they believe it's an allergy (she had an allergic reaction last week to some new nappies) but like you she hasn't been uncomfortable or itching.

Same here. Apparently there's a type that's not itchy? No idea if that's true or my son just got lucky

When DS had it last year the itching only kicked in about 48 hours after the first spot appeared. Luckily we only had 1 really bad night so the itching lasted probably 24 hours.

My DS had them over half term. When the first spots appeared they weren’t itchy. The second day they were a bit but that night, the next day and night they were very itchy. It may be worth getting in some calming cream and antihistamines just in case then you’ll have them at home for stings/bites anyway.

Mine weren't itchy at all but I felt like death and had a sky high fever.

Yours sounds like hand foot and mouth

I have 2 DDs. The first one caught chxpx and was terribly itchy but otherwise fine. In general, she has sensitive skin.
The younger DD caught chxpx from her but they are totally different. So DD2 had virus symptoms and felt rubbish but was not very itchy.

Jadey31 · 22/02/2023 12:37

@dementedpixie I also thought it could be HFM but the pharmacist was pretty certain it was an allergic reaction

DS was 3 when he caught chicken pox from preschool. He had lots of them and they looked awful but he didn't really itch. I slathered him in cream though! DD (8) obviously caught them from him and they appeared precisely two weeks later. She was absolutely riddled and they drove her insane, despite the same amount of cream being applied.

They do say the second child to catch it gets it worse because they've been exposed to the first child longer than the first child was exposed to whoever gave it to them.
