How can we trust the Police?

From the Daily Mail:

Other comments and content shared in the group referred to disabled people as 'mgs', travellers as 'ps' and people of east Asian heritage as 'c*s'.

Mr Hobbs further detailed comments Thomas made about Officer A, a junior female officer who was assigned to their team for a period of time, calling her 'f ugly'.

In a separate conversation, Thomas suggested to the WhatsApp group that he name his dog 'Auschwitz', 'Adolf' or 'Fred' or 'Ian' after 'my two favourite child sex killers'.

Elsewhere, Thomas referred to a black Police Sergeant being disciplined as 'the biggest threat of him ending up back in chains,' the hearing was told.

Referring to a 'blind man' who once boarded a train he was on, former Police Thomas wrote in the chat: 'Poor c*t I hate the thought of being blind. I would prefer being in a m*g scooter for the rest of my life.'Mr Hobbs explained that what Thomas meant in his reference to a 'm*g scooter' was a wheelchair."

How many misogynistic nasty power wielding Police are out there? I feel sick reading some of that article.

I’ve never trusted them

ChilliBandit · 21/02/2023 18:02

I agree with you OP, but you will soon get the “NAPALT, not my Nigel brigade” to tell you it’s another (of many) isolated incident, there is no issue with police culture and you are mentally ill if you don’t trust the police (actually said to me on a previous thread).

BlueSlate · 21/02/2023 18:02

My dad was in the police.

I wouldn't trust them and haven't since he used interrogation and restraint techniques on me when I was 17 to force a confession out of me for something I hadn't done. I refused to confess, of course, but it was terrifying, painful and, by the end, I seriously started to question whether I could have actually been guilty of what I was being accused of - although I knew I absolutely wasn't. I even considered whether confessing and taking the punishment was worth it just to make it stop.

Consequently, I didn't report either of the two rapes I experienced and vowed to have as little to do with them as possible.

However, as an adult, I have had to deal with a CP police officer who couldn't have been more supportive and understanding and another from the DV unit who was equally supportive. Both male. But, as a rule, no, i wouldnt trust them.

AnyFucker · 21/02/2023 18:04

We can’t

Trust is earned, and they haven’t earned it

Awful. Truly disgusting.

What is the redacted M word? All I can think of is mugs?

@BlueSlate That's horrific, to not be able to trust your Dad or the Police. It does make me wonder how some Police are behind closed doors. Yes it' snot all, but this is becoming far too common. I also don't think I would report a rape as so few reports result in convictions.

I read that article and think I would never ever ever want to join the Police. But I imagine racist, misogynist thugs read that article and start writing their application there and then to be part of the boys club. Terrifying.

Nope. I'm a police officer and can no longer defend my "colleagues". I'm actively looking for a new job (difficult when this job is all I've ever known, but I will persist). I can't be part of the problem any more.

It's not just a few "bad apples" any more, it's a whole fucking orchard.

ChilliBandit · 21/02/2023 18:26

@Herewegowithanotherchange - I am so sorry you are being driven out of your chosen career by this. Even more sad as the police need people like you that recognise there is a desperate need for reform. I really wish you the best.

Thank you, it's appreciated. I love, and have always loved my job, but I no longer feel proud of it. I actually feel really ashamed, especially as a woman, to be part of such an institution. Maybe things will change in the future but I can't stay the way it currently is (and has been).

Herewegowithanotherchange · 21/02/2023 18:31

Gonna bow out of this thread as don't want to derail - maybe I'll do an AMA when I escape 😂

DoubleShotEspresso · 21/02/2023 18:31

No we cannot.

We have reached the stage where we not only need to consider funding of police, but also how they represent the communities they supposedly serve.
Those messages are vile and sickening.

However, the bar was lowered in recent years for the employment criteria of police, I really feel this needs urgent review and almost shut down and start again is the only way faith in the police can ever have any hope of being rebuilt. It's imploding in front of us daily .

Comedycook · 21/02/2023 18:35

In all honesty as a white middle class person I am ashamed to say I thought certain groups in society were exaggerating about the police. I apologise.

lanbro · 21/02/2023 18:41

My friend's ex is a police officer, he is a vile, abusive cunt, still trying to manipulate and control her over a decade after they divorced, of course he is well spoken of by his peers (probably because theure all like that!)

I think the police force naturally drawers controlling and arrogantas people As they can then be even more controlling and it's allowed!

Loopyloooooo · 21/02/2023 18:41

Oh my , as a Mum to a disabled child with learning and physical disabilities this made my blood run cold and I wish I hadn't read it. Unbelievable to think there are still shitheads out there who believe this stuff and those people are meant to protect us.

My kids are mixed race and I'm not surprised by the racism (that is obviously never ok) but the derogatory words against people with learning disabilities who are our most vulnerable...it just beggars belief.

I am glad you've posted about this though OP it needs saying.

Knackeredmommy · 21/02/2023 18:45

We can't.

Zipps · 21/02/2023 18:45

I know someone very high up in the police as he is my friend's ex husband. He's her ex because he beat her and cheated on her.

AlloftheTime · 21/02/2023 18:46

@Herewegowithanotherchange

on a personal level, I don't blame you and wish you the best of luck finding a new path.

However, devastating as all the reports are about so many officers I have to believe the overwhelming majority are good people and it's scary to see them/you leaving.

namechangeforthisbleep · 21/02/2023 18:57

I used to go to after parties after a club and a police man would always turn up (the same one) with drugs he had taken from criminals and give them out acting like he was fucking Jesus Christ himself. Not gonna pretend I never dabbled in anything in my day but I wouldn't touch this with a barge pole as knew he was abusing so many's peoples trust! Also haven't had anything since I was in my 20s and stupid before anyone jumps on me

mrscumberbatch11 · 21/02/2023 19:29

@icelolly12 thank you for clarifying that.

That's truly hideous. How utterly disappointing.

FruHagen · 21/02/2023 19:39

We can't trust them.

They need to be reformed, The College of Policing completely dismantled and a new way of recruiting smart, motivated, intelligent and competent people into its ranks set into motion.

VladmirsPoutine · 21/02/2023 19:48

Things might actually change now because people who hitherto trusted the police and thought they were a force of good and all that are being negatively impacted. It's quite odd to witness this shift in attitude and at times quite jarring.

Desmondo2021 · 21/02/2023 19:53

You do know the vast majority (statistically) of our Police men and women are good, honest, hard working and committed people right? Do we suggest a full reshuffle of teachers or doctors for the few bad eggs amongst them? And, as normally the media are steering this ship at the moment and sadly you suckers are all happy to enjoy the ride.

I agree with you. For decades now black men, and boys especially have been harassed, and beaten, even killed by the Police. Many in Society have chosen to believe that they somehow deserved what has, and is still happening to them disproportionately.
