Travel insurance with stage 4 cancer ?

Hi all,

My lovely MIL adores to travel, but has been diagnosed with terminal stage 4 cancer and can't find anywhere that will insure her.

She's got a terminal diagnosis but is stable on her medication and is expected to live 5yrs + Doctors are happy for her to travel.

Can anyone advise who to approach for travel insurance in this instance? Is it likely she will find insurance for Europe only or might she be able to find insurance to go further afield? Travelling is one of the things that makes her happiest so we are really keen to find a way to make it possible for her!

Posted at her request. Thank you for any suggestions!!

There is a company called Insure With who get great reviews but wouldn't insure me (breast cancer). I used Avanti in the end.

Insurewith are great - I'm usually £80 ish for a single trip with pretty high coverage (also S4)

Sorry can’t help. Wondering is she maybe tried asking MacMillan if they know of any travel insurance providers that others have had success with? Or is their maybe a cancer support group near her where she could maybe ask this question from others with similar diagnosis and also not unreasonably wanting to enjoy travel?

AllClear are good and say that they’ll insure pretty much everyone. You may find that it’s done on a single trip basis.

Another thought is to consult a charity that focuses on the particular cancer. Failing that, I think MacMillan and Cancer Research UK are worth trying.
Good luck.

I don’t think anyone will actually give you travel insurance that covers the cancer. If you are lucky they will cover you for anything that might occur but you need to be very careful and read the small print.

You will probably find it easier to find insurance for a find trip fairly soon than in a few months too. Annual policy is usually not an option

CharlotteRose90 · 21/02/2023 18:12

All clear or stay sure are the only ones I trust. They were the only 2 that would cover me when I had chemo too.

Depending on her type of cancer there is probably an on line forum for support. If you look on there you may find the same question asked and people with the same diagnosis answering it. I know sadly about the bowel cancer forum and on there are loads of people chatting about insurance providers.

Good to go or total travel protection will provide cover.

I’ve been in this situation, hardly anyone actually covers you for the cancer but you have to omit it from the insurance, and then it’s £££ In the end I travelled without it. Took basic insurance for cancellations/bags etc but in the end thought fuck it, I’m dying, I’ll go anyway! I was stable and very little would happen that needed treating immediately. As long as she travels with all meds etc and takes some extra I’d just go for it. Good luck!

Staysure are often recommended. If her medication includes chemo drugs then she won’t get through the online application for them but she can call them and give her history and they will remove cover for cancer but still cover her for other things.

I was recommended insurecancer.com last week - haven’t gone to them yet as I’ve decided to wait until my current treatment is over before trying to get cover.

re where they will cover I’ve found that if they’re willing to cover they’re willing to cover wherever you want but you pay £££££££ for US /Caribbean etc.
