The clutch on my car just died. How to offload it?

I can’t afford to fix it. Car has 6 months MOT and is worth about £1600 on a good day. The clutch will be £800 estimate to fix.

How do I offload it? WWYD? Has anyone used “webuyanycar”? They seem to want you to drive it their depot and this won’t actually go anywhere right now.

sad and frustrated! Please help!

Contact a scrap dealer?

GettingStuffed · 21/02/2023 13:08

If you advise them that the clutch has gone they should be able to send a lorry out.

ComtesseDeSpair · 21/02/2023 13:11

You can try listing it on eBay first making clear it’s a non-runner and will need to be collected and towed: a clutch is an easy fix for somebody with the time mechanical skill. I’ve also previously sold a non-runner to Redcorn for scrap, got a reasonable amount for if concessions I just wanted it off the drive.

Hellocatshome · 21/02/2023 13:14

Asvertise it on Facebook marketplace for its value minus the amount to replace the clutch. We did this when ours was dead (not the clutch) and we had quite a lot of offers, someone came and towed it away same day and we got more for it than we thought we would.

Advertise at reduced price as needing clutch, someone will buy it to fix and resell.

Grumpybutfunny · 21/02/2023 15:55

Facebook spares or repairs someone will likely fix it on their drive and sell it on.

Scrap yard - make sure they'll give you a certificate of scrappage (or whatever it's called) - your insurance may need to see that.

We recently got £500 for our Ford.

BluIsTheColor · 21/02/2023 16:03

Definitely try eBay and Facebook marketplace first but be honest.
Don't just ask for £1600-800=800
The right person will be able to fix it for a few hundred so maybe start at 10 or 11 hundred.

Ok will do. So fed up.

When our car died years ago, we contacted a scrap dealer who came with a low loader and took it away. It was such a crap and old car that they only paid us £20!!

The real kicker was we’d just put in £50 of diesel and used about 5 miles worth. The thing was, we’d already spent about £2k on it that year alone, plus more the year before. Similar cars were only selling for about £200 on autotrader and they actually started (I assume!!) Sometimes it’s best to just cut your losses.

Well Thankyou all!!!
it’s gone and I got £1000!

Obviously I’ve lost money overall but I know my Sunk Cost Fallacy and got out when I could. Phew!
