Death of a relative - time off

Wasn't sure where to ask this. My father has just called to say my elderly grandfather has just passed. Father was very upset on phone. Would it be ok to ask to leave work a couple of hours early today to go see my father and be with family?

Of course - if I was a boss and someone asked me this there would be no question at all. Sorry for your loss

Yes absolutely ask.

Thanks I've not worked here long so wasn't sure of etiquette. I will send my boss a message now.

Does this sound like an ok message to send. Would it be OK for me to take the rest of the afternoon off as I have just had a call to say my grandfather has passed away and I would like to go and see my father to make sure he is ok.

Sounds polite and honest. Cannot see the harm in asking.

No one here can answer questions about your workplace policy for this - just ask your manager. I’m sorry for your loss.

I'm so sorry for your loss.

If you can ring your boss or see them in person.

If I was your boss I'd have no issue at all with giving you the time.

When my grandpa died I phoned work immediately and said I wouldn't be in that day. No issues from my boss at all and later that day flowers arrived from her.
