Is this for real?

Either I've missed this completely or it's a scam. Those who passed driving test pre 301; have to renew?

www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/home-news/dvla-driving-test-check-b2285642.html DVLA issues £1,000 warning to every driver who passed their test before 2014

Of course it's not a scam. I've renewed once and will have to renew again in a couple of years. Do you not have a driving licence card with the date on?

shinynewapple22 · 20/02/2023 17:19

As far as I'm aware jf you passed your test in the 1980s and have never applied for a photo card you don't need to update anything .

Clickbait, lazy journalism.
I still have a paper licence & hope to hang onto it until I'm 70! It's become a point of principle, even though it would be quite convenient to actually have photo ID other than my passport. Not cutting off my nose to spite my face at all 😂

You'd think people would read the T&C's and expiry dates of their own certificates and held licences (bank cards even for goodness sake) to make sure they are not in breach of them or when they are due to expire, if they did they would know this isn't news - unsurprisingly a passport also needs to be renewed before it expires if you wish to use it for the intended purpose.

I find it so odd that there are people who imagine a central organisation needs to hand hold them through that by providing reminders (thought it's good that they do) and if not think that it feels unfair. Surely we are responsible for our own lives, as adults and should do our own due diligence in ensuring our legal permits are actually in order with our correct up to date details on them or accept it was us who breached the agreement and accept a fine.

This is. Correct, I still only have my paper one.

I received a reminder from the DVLA three months before mine was due to expire. Does the DVLA have your colleague's current address? If not that is something else "they could" receive a fine for.
Or perhaps it simply got lost/delayed in the post.

As far as I know, he has lived at the same address for some time.
