How much do you pay for Sky (or alternative)?

I've been with Sky for 15 years and managed to keep prices relatively low. We have broadband and TV with them. I've got a few more months before the prices will change, but an advisor has just told me I should be paying over £100 for what I've got and I'm paying £68 (although that includes £7 for Netflix, 2 screen subscription). So I can expect prices to rise when I'm out of contract.

It seems so expensive when we don't have sport or cinema, just basic TV package. What do others do? Is it time to leave Sky and go onto something like NowTV and get broadband separately?

£5 for Sky Essentials package, which we'll cancel in a month.

We were paying around £80 and called them to cancel, as we realised we just weren't watching it. That was for the standard package, plus the Sports for DH and box sets (which I think are standard now).

The sports he actually watches have moved off Sky so he ended up using apps for his Cyclocross and American Football. Long story short - we had a bit of credit to use up so have used it on the essential package since August, and are down to our last £3 in credit. Once that goes, we have a FreeSat box to plug in (bought as christmas gift for us but it was about £200 I believe), our Netflix (£8 a month) and his annual fees for his sports apps that he can watch through the smart tv or his phone.

£80 a month was just stupid for us, as we were out of contract and really weren't watching any of it. With the freesat box, we can still record what we want and watch it when it suits us. We rarely watch live tv so that works for us.

How much do you pay for broadband?

i pay £23 Plusnet. Sorry, I misread, I thought it was just for the actual tv packages. So my total is £37 then with broadband.

Linnet · 20/02/2023 14:39

£46.50 per month for sky tv with HD channels. I think we’re supposed to be able to access box sets but our box is not linked to our broadband so that doesn’t work. I got an email this morning telling me it’s going up another £3 from April. I’ve been considering cancelling anyway and this might just push me to do it. I already pay for Netflix separately, my daughter pays for Disney and Now tv and I’m not sure I really actually watch that many channels on sky.

TeenagersAngst · 20/02/2023 14:39

Thanks all, some useful info here - I think I'm probably on a good deal for Sky. I've had a look at standalone broadband fees and they seem the same or more expensive.

Ours is about £100 per month, unlimited broadband, sports, no movies.

And then we have Netflix and prime on top of that.

We are with virgin. Basic TV and phone and 250mg internet.

They wrote to us a couple of weeks ago increasing our bill from £66 to £93 a month.

Called Sky, got a comparable quote (more channels so we can do away with Now Tv, and more internet speed for £58.

Called Virgin back to cancel and they dropped down immediately to £53 a month! I really wanted to go with sky, just out of principle and that we can ditch Now Tv, but we would need to have a BT line installed (which admittedly they would have done at no cost) and Virgin have confirmed no price rise for us during the life of our new 18 month contract.

If Virgin go back on the price rise within the contract time I will cancel on the spot and go to sky, although I trying to convince DW to just move across next year anyway.

Last time I contacted Virgin to say I’d had a cheaper quote, they told me to accept that quote as they would not negotiate the price they had given me - even though it was a huge increase!

I am about to try again but am struggling to decide on an alternative provider for a basic tv, internet and phone package as I am limited because I can’t have a satellite dish fixed to my house.

Cupcakequeen75 · 20/02/2023 15:53

On a deal with BT and am currently paying £31/month for full fibre BB (900Mb), TV (with Sport) and landline.
Been on it for just over a year and I think it ends in a few months time so will have to see what they can do when the time comes.
Would be willing to lower the BB speed, drop Sport and loose the landline.

popandchoc · 20/02/2023 16:01

I just joined sky and am paying £41 for tv and broadband including netflix.

I was with Bt before paying £82 for same.

Wilma55 · 20/02/2023 16:07

How do actually get to speak to someone to negotiate? I'm with Virgin.

ElinorDashwood68 · 20/02/2023 16:09

£4 monthly for Now entertainment package

PopGoesTheProsecco · 20/02/2023 16:44

Inspired by this thread, I've just contacted Sky to see if I can get my bill reduced. Went through to the cancellations team and they quoted me a figure that's even higher than my current package! He advised me to phone back in April for better deals.

Beezknees · 20/02/2023 16:53

£71, took out a new 18 month contract in December, includes HD and netflix. I've been with them 10 years, I think when I first signed up I was paying around £47. If it ever goes over £80 I'm cancelling.

Baldieheid · 20/02/2023 16:57

The original guy I spoke to at Sky did that - immediately went into the sales pitch for Sky Glass despite being told that I wanted to cancel.

He just would not listen to me or give me the answers to my questions. It was all about him and his just sell sell sell and "why can't you afford this any more?" intrusive questions. I actually had to be rude to him and tell him it was none of his business why we wanted to cancel - he insisted it was. I got so pissed off I put the phone down on him and called back a day later.

Second guy was lovely, and immediately agreed to cancel and offered us a choice of a refund of the balance as it stood, or the option to downgrade to the most basic package and spend it over a few months.

Sky, if you're reading this (fat chance) you need none of the first type of reps and many many more of the second.

Blaggingit123 · 20/02/2023 17:55

I think I have same package as you OP, but it’s a lot cheaper - I renewed with a new customer offer (been a sky customer for ages) on live chat which was a 3 months free broadband one think £30something - then after 3 months I had a random email saying my offer had been extended by 12 months so 15 months free broadband. Not sure if accidental or not. They don’t negotiate as much any more though you can only get advertised offers.

Get through the multiple choices to Retentions, they have the ability to lower prices and negotiate.

So I phoned back a bit later, spoke to someone completely different (in between the two calls I realised I was no longer within the minimum contract term for the TV package) and I managed to get a new router for free, £20 off my monthly bills (even taking into account the April price rise) and free Netflix.

iloveyankeecandle · 20/02/2023 19:57

£52 a month. Includes internet and multi room. Basic tv package.

PinkPantherPaws · 20/02/2023 20:06

£22 a month for broadband.

£60 a year for updates to our 'special' firestick which has every TV channel and pretty much every film and box set you can think of.

I'm not interested in a morality lecture either if anyone wants to try. I'm OK with it 😂

Aries491 · 21/02/2023 11:57

Found this thread while arguing with sky today lol, they're trying to add a tenner a month onto my bill from April when we literally renegotiated a month ago. So far no budge on the increases anyone had any luck or should I cancel and move elsewhere?

No judgement on the fire stick lol I'm tempted, know people who have one and rate it

CeriB82 · 21/02/2023 14:52

I think its pushing £100. Sport is on in HD and multi room

we never go out, no cinema, rarely drink and DH and the kids are huge football fans. Cheaper than attending the matches

HoollyWugger · 21/02/2023 15:07

I need a new provider but can't sign up for a 2yr contract etc because I'll be moving in with DP within the next year, so I feel stuck with paying around £67/m to Virgin.

elm26 · 21/02/2023 15:12

Pay £36 a month for broadband, fire stick and IPTV (every channel, sport etc).

We also have Netflix and prime.
