If you had GD, how did it impact you/your DC years on?

I had GD in my second pregnancy that was left untreated for nearly two months, only properly managed in the last 2-3 weeks prior to birth.

I’ve read all I could find about potential long-term impact on me and child, along with statistics about obesity and Type 2 diabetes…

If you had GD years ago, did it impact you and your child in any way? Did you follow recommended actions to reduce risk of T2 diabetes like losing all extra weight and extended breastfeeding?
Did your GD baby struggle with weight (or anything else) in any way?

I had diet-controlled GD in both pregnancies. I was and still am size 12 and within BMI recommendations.

Both babies were 7lbs and a bit and arrived naturally exactly on their due dates. One child has grown on the 50th centile and the other 9th-25th as she eats like a bird.

I don’t think my GD has impacted either of them as far as I can tell. As for me? Other than the test a few weeks after giving birth, I wasn’t aware I should have an annual test, so I’m not sure.

My diabetes never left after the pregnancy.

My bmi and weight is within the normal range for my height but I'm still diabetic.

Ds and dd fine although dd has a heart murmur linked with me being diabetic in pregnancy but it doesn't affect her.

You should be having your hba1c checked yearly.

@anomaly23 nightmare scenario 💐 is there hope it goes away in the future? Is it diet-controlled?

I had GD in my second pregnancy, diagnosed at 28 weeks. I ended up needing metformin to control it until birth. I needed a glucose drip during labour and my dd was only 5lb 6oz. But, she is now 9 and is a perfect weight for her height, with no health issues.

I have yearly bloods done as I'm on statins for an unrelated reason. My annual diabetes check is still within normal range, but it is sneaking closer to the prediabetic range, which I feel will be an inevitability. I have pcos and I'm insulin resistant so I think I'm more at risk.

My GD baby is nearly 6, and is so far (touch wood!) in rude health.

My GP cheerfully told me that if you had GD it wasnt a matter of if you develop type 2 but when so my best bet was to control my diet to put off thewhen. I dont know if thats true but it did push me to eat better. Ie less cake all through the day.

I had insulin dependent GD in both my pregnancies 10 and 12 years ago. Both perfectly fine healthy children. And I have had no signs of type 2 although I have kept to a low carb diet.
