Fruit and veg shortages

I'm not in the UK but I keep on seeing pictures on Twitter of empty supermarket shelves for fruit and veg. Is it really a problem or are they isolated issues?

Makes sense tbh though we grow and sell seasonally. The demand for year round random fruit and veg leads to a tonne of wastage and excess air miles. Why we export carrots for example to import some back is just...wild.

Ifailed · 20/02/2023 08:10

plenty of ftuit & veg at independent green-grocers, but prices double what they were last February.

No tomatoes in Aldi on Thursday. Managed to get some in Sainsburys on Friday though (though there weren’t many). Makes sense if there’s a crop failure.

Who the Hell wants tomatoes at this time of year?
They're out of season and have to be forced under glass, so they don't ripen properly, are pale, tough and have no taste.
The idea that we should be able to buy any fruit & veg anytime, any place, anywhere in UK is ridiculous.

Peppers and tomatoes! Tried three supermarkets on Saturday, all were out of stock. Went to a local green grocer, he told me there's an issue in Spain due to weather and the price is sky high...something like £6 a kilo. One pepper was going to set me back £1.80...I went without!

LlynTegid · 20/02/2023 08:14

Not seen that at my local supermarket, though I am lucky enough to have a twice weekly market for fruit and veg.

GoodChat · 20/02/2023 08:16

@Felicitythecat you do know that we get tomatoes imported, don't you, so they're absolutely fine

We were shocked at the supermarket Friday afternoon, the fruit and veg isles were almost bare. Big Tesco store. No tomatoes, peppers, bananas at all. Literally half of the fruit and veg section was bare shelves. We commented on it as DH said this is what he'd seen on Twitter.

Why is it happening?

Same here and our local large Sainsburys store had hardly any fresh vegetables.

No tomatoes or cucumbers where I live. Eggs are limited to 2 packs per customer and often sold out.

vitahelp · 20/02/2023 08:19

I understood it was due to adverse weather conditions in Spain & Morocco. It has only been an issue at our local supermarket for the past week and only affecting cucumber & tomato’s

vitahelp · 20/02/2023 08:19

*tomatoes 😂

Err no, they aren't fine, so I don't buy them at this time of year.

I'd sooner wait and grow my own.

YesYou · 20/02/2023 08:19

@Felicitythecat erm, we import tomatoes 🤣

You'll never get accurate answers on a thread like this. People either don't notice or refuse to notice. I was shopping at the same time as a friend in the same supermarket and saw her at the tills. I commented on the shortages and she said that she thinks people are making it up because the didn't want brexit. She said the shelves were full Confused

There were no tomatoes, peppers, tomato purée, bananas, or eggs. Just huge empty spaces where they once were!

CeriB82 · 20/02/2023 08:22

Went to tesco on Saturday and there was no cucumber nor peppers but asda had plenty

Yawn.

Ah well, when all else fails blame Brexit 🙄

PuttingDownRoots · 20/02/2023 08:23

Its eggs that can be hit and miss here.

Cereal varies each week

Mostly is Essentials ranges selling out though.

YesYou · 20/02/2023 08:24

@Felicitythecat when did I blame brexit? Talk about spectacularly missing the point.

Blessedwithsunshine · 20/02/2023 08:27

This is rubbish! Supermarkets are crammed with every conceivable item. I wonder if you are in Europe and this is deliberate misinformation to warn people of the perils of brexit or something?!

We have always had fully stocked shelves so strange to suggest otherwise

Fluffleupagus · 20/02/2023 08:27

We've had no tomatoes at either Tesco or Lidl for the last fortnight or so, and peppers are very low too.

Dustinsdart · 20/02/2023 08:28

No tomatoes or cucumbers at my local Tesco on Friday (Lincolnshire) but Lidl had plenty.

I buy British tomatoes from the Isle of Wight all year round, so no we don’t always import 🍅

GoodChat · 20/02/2023 08:29

are you on the Isle of Wight @Blessedwithsunshine?

I never said you did.

Talk about spectacularly missing the point.

Your friend did, here "she thinks people are making it up because they didn't want brexit."

BigGreen · 20/02/2023 08:29

Peppers and tomatoes gone for a few weeks now from my local Tesco. Plenty to be had at the market but they are £££

Blessedwithsunshine · 20/02/2023 08:30

I always feel like this is an almost a deliberate effort to create runs on things. Same with the petrol last year. It’s an onerous new way to damage other countries, man made shortages .
