Anyone awake… I think I have dry socket

Had a lower wisdom tooth out on Saturday and things were okay until I’ve woken up an hour ago with very very intense pain… I think I have dry socket as I can’t really see a blood clot over the area but I can see lots of white. I’ve taken some ibuprofen and paracetamol but really this is the worst pain I’ve had since the procedure itself which makes me think it mustn’t be normal?

In this instance who do I contact? The dental hospital where I had the procedure or my dentist who referred me?

Its a gnawing deep pain… can’t concentrate on anything else.

@HairyKitty thanks so much for checking in. Today thank God hasn’t been as bad as previous days, I’m still getting quite heavy pains like screws being tightened in the bones in my cheeks and face approx 3-4 times a day.

The clove oil packing thingy also fell out today I think if I’m still getting these heavy pains over the weekend I need to go back in.

Thank you everyone for your support and help.

This sound horrendous OP. Did you have a wisdom/back tooth out? I’m not a dentist but as they’ve said it’s not dry socket is it possible there has been nerve damage/disturbance? A couple of my family members have received feedback about having wisdom teeth out as theirs sit so close to facial nerves.

Hope you get some relief.

Yes @BankOfDave it was the lower left wisdom tooth and was impacted that’s what I’m thinking that it must be some nerve issue. I really hope it’s not something long lasting or permanent. I’ve been in more pain this week compared to all the infections I had in the tooth which is why it was removed in the first place!

Now you’ve said impacted wisdom tooth extraction and the pain has been ongoing without dry socket it does like like a nerve injury. Do you have any tingling or numbness or just pain? You have to go back and let them know. I believe the pain can subsidise but you need to have all this checked out, advice on how long the pain will last and some decent pain relief beyond OTC.

Good luck. Poor you.

Thank you so much for that advice i don’t have any tingling or numbness it’s a deep gnawing tight pain and when it’s very very bad I can feel certain sections of my cheek feel raised and lumpy. I think its better to give the clinic a call tomorrow they are open on Saturdays rather than waiting all weekend. Thanks again.

My DS had exactly this pain and it took a month to diagnose: please Google trismus. We’d never heard of it, and he lived on codeine for a month and was in huge distress. There’s a particular jaw exercise you do for it and it almost instantly cures it. Hope you can find it on YouTube. Your experience sounds just like his.

But also, go to the clinic and get them to check too!

I’ve had dry socket a few times, it is one of the worse pains going, and due to various medical issues I live in pain, and have a high pain tolerance! Only treatment was clove oil, went back to dentist and they basically roughed up around it (yes, I screamed!) and put more lint with clove oil on it. Next time I treated it myself, eventually went, but it did make whole of jaw / face extremely painful just because of all the nerves there being irritated and inflamed. Hope it clears soon, it really is horrid

Weirdly I had virtually no pain with dry socket ConfusedBlush I only went back as it tasted funny, like that awful infection taste
They did a confused face when I said I didn't need painkillers

I think I hate you! 😉
