Has anyone claimed on insurance for broken tv?

My husband was moving ours today and has somehow cracked it so the screen is not watchable. He thinks he pushed too hard in a corner while grabbing it to move it 😓. I'm being very magnanimous about it of course while thinking thank god it wasn't me!
Of course excess would be an issue anyway but is this sort of thing accidental damage even though totally his fault ?

Yes it’s accidental damage but unless it’s an incredibly expensive TV I wouldn’t claim as your insurance will go up and, as you say, the excess is usually at least £250 but often more

OldTinHat · 19/02/2023 17:02

It was an accident as I'm sure he didn't intend to break it!

Depends if you have accidental cover on your insurance and what the excess is. Your premiums will go up next year though.

rwalker · 19/02/2023 17:02

The excess and the fact you have to declare you’ve had a claim when you come to renew
which would no doubt up your premium
unless it was £1000+ I wouldn’t bother

It's not a hugely expensive tv. But several hundred pounds we could do without spending again - got the one from our bedroom down - pass the binoculars...

I got one for my bedroom and one for adult ds room from Facebook marketplace - both 42", £30 each, both work fine. Might be cheaper than insurance excess?

Do you have a big charity shop or community furniture project near you? They always have second hand TV's.

My dd broke 6 so I was a regular visitor to them for a few years......

Oh good plan. Will check out market place. I'm not too fussy

I did claim when I spilt milk into the oven control panel (from the microwave above) for a £800 oven it was worth it. Premiums haven’t gone up dramatically…although I suspect if I did so again I might find otherwise!!

Teapleasebobb · 19/02/2023 18:00

Yep, ds accidentally smashed the screen with a toy when he was 2. Claimed on the contents insurance, got a pay out for more than we paid for the TV (must have been a new for old policy?) and our premiums didn't skyrocket next time around.

Candlesamdyoga · 19/02/2023 18:29

I'll look into my excess and see what the form is. Would be nice to get a nice new one but equally if excess is ££ then it's not an option right now

I claimed for a brand new tv that was knocked over by my teenage son, £100.00 excess , replaced like for like.
One and only claim so far in 30 years , policy didn't go up , in fact over the years my insurance has gone down as i shop around at every renewal time.

MaisyMary77 · 19/02/2023 18:56

We claimed after my son got a bit over zealous with a wii remote. (Took playing super smash bros very literally….) It was a very expensive tv, they replaced it like for like within a week. No noticeable difference to our premiums. Only time we’ve ever claimed. 😀

Candlesamdyoga · 19/02/2023 18:57

I'll check as looking at marketplace there are only people selling their "broken screen" tvs for £50! Chancers

Flavabobble · 19/02/2023 18:59

I've claimed for a TV, several years ago though. I've also made 2 other claims over the years - never had much of an increase in premiums, and I keep my excess low. ~£75 or so.

Now locked out of my insurance account and need a password reset. But the email for the reset isn't coming through. I HATE gmail - why is it so awful? It's not in my junk folder but nor is it anywhere else. Life is so irritating...
