Miracle cures for tiredness

I am fed up of feeling constantly tired. I am a teacher so quite a full on job but I just seem to spend my time waiting until I can go to bed again as I'm exhausted. I'm falling asleep each night on the sofa and don't have any energy to do anything. I don't look forward to plans we might have at the weekend as I just know I will be exhausted. I have had blood tests and nothing untoward with thyroid. I was wondering if anyone takes any supplements that have made a miraculous change to their energy levels?

Did they screen for anaemia ?

Iron infusion for me. My ferritin isn’t ever on the floor (except pregnancy) but have restless legs. I’m not in the UK and it’s pretty straight forward for me to see an endocrinologist and mine likes ferritin to be above 50 in women generally. Get vitamin D checked out as well.

Oh god! My restless legs are absolutely dreadful but I do mostly manage them with magnesium.

I will have to see if I can dig out the results of my tests as I can't remember exactly what they tested.

you should make sure they checked your iron as PP said; mine were really low and it was a different ballgame after supplements

Following with interest as my DH is the same, he’s on his feet all day in a pretty relentless job and he’s shattered even at weekends, even though he gets plenty of sleep. He’s often exhausted, especially after eating. Like I’m tired because I have a busy job and we have a 3 year old, but his is next level.

Iron! You’ll need something for constipation though 😂

CorsicaDreaming · 18/02/2023 19:21

Could it be one (or all of)

Perimenopause ? (Go to gp and ask about HRT? )

You've had Covid ? (Co Q 10 from Boots helped me a bit - then I got peri!)

Iron low - try Floradix or Floravital

Insomnia - let me know when you solve that one!

FatAgainItsLettuceTime · 18/02/2023 19:28

I felt the most energised and least exhausted when I was eating well, drinking lots of water and doing exercise. I wasn't getting more sleep just better quality sleep.

I am absolutely knackered recently and I know it's because I'm eating lots of crap unhealthy carbs like cake and chocolate and I'm not doing any exercise beyond my days to day getting DD to school, walking round the shops etc.

Waitingfortaco · 18/02/2023 19:50

Thanks!
Could be any (many) of these things. I'm 41 so potentially peri? I actually had the blood tests as my weight is increasing out of hand and I wondered (hoped) there was an easily solved reason. There wasn't! The doctor did advise me though to cut down on carbs as she said at my age they will make the biggest difference to me losing weight. To be fair, I haven't really had a proper go at this so I need to.

Just found print out of results. Yes, they checked iron levels. Everything is kind of middle of normal range. Nothing stands out. Although there is nothing that mentions vitamin D or B. Anyone know how these might show on blood results? Not sure if they've been checked or if this is something I could follow up on.

B12, Vit C and D.

mydudero · 18/02/2023 20:18

I had blood tests last year due to extreme fatigue and some other symptoms that pointed to possible iron deficiency / thyroid problems. Those were both fine but I had folic deficiency anaemia (low in vitamin B9 i.e folate) and also low in vitamin D. Took a 3 month course of folic acid supplements and will continue to take vit D throughout the winter (both of these were in addition to the wellwoman supplements I was already taking daily). I have noticed a huge change and am so bloody glad I pushed for those blood tests!! I had never heard of this deficiency before, I honestly just thought folic acid was related to pregnancy 🙈 I would push for blood tests in these if you haven't had already!

CorsicaDreaming · 18/02/2023 20:54

Definitely take vitamin D whatever.

In UK we are all pretty much deficient all winter. I've been to my GP several times of late, and every time she says - make sure you keep taking the vitamin D... low levels can cause fatigue plus it is needed for bone protection, etc

Waitingfortaco · 20/02/2023 18:02

I now have vitamin b12 tablets, vitamin D tablets and iron tablets in addition to the magnesium I was already taking.

Additionally, Zinc is what I take to try and reduce colds etc.

HowardKirksConscience · 20/02/2023 18:13

Leave teaching. Not joking.

Don't take anything containing B12. If you are absorbing from your diet you don't need them, if you aren't absorbing, B12 tablets mask a deficiency for 4-6 MONTHS after taking even a single tablet.

If you haven't taken anything containing B12 in the last 4-6 months, get that tested asap.

Also check folic acid/folate levels - optimal is 3/4 of the lab range.

It could be worth requesting a trial of B12 injections anyway, even if the results are in range - in range doesn't mean optimal.
