What do you do when you feel too ill to do anything?

Luckingfovely · 18/02/2023 13:22

I'm feeling desperately sorry for myself after two weeks in bed following a virus that turned into an infection. On second batch of antibiotics. Nothing seems to help.

I need to relax and rest but feel angsty and restless. Everything hurts and I don't want to move, but don't want to stay still either.

How do you self-soothe when you're feeling really poorly? Would love any grains of advice Confused

Get up and lie on the floor and let the toddler pretend I'm a mountain

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 18/02/2023 14:24

Watch television.

Nodney · 18/02/2023 14:24

Youtube. That's what I do when I'm ill. Silly videos of animals. I don't watch it at all when I'm well but if I'm ill I do. I also like watching films I've seen many times before but with my eyes shut. V relaxing! Really hope that you start to feel better soon

I play candy crush and have ridiculously long baths. The cabin fever is terrible, hope you’re on the mend soon.

3LittleFishes · 18/02/2023 14:47

Watch a rubbish documentary on netflix until I fall asleep!

Luredbyapomegranate · 18/02/2023 14:49

Audio books
podcasts
long baths

try and get some daylight a couple of times in the day

TheChosenTwo · 18/02/2023 14:52

Bit of a change of scenery might help, can you go and sit on the sofa at least? Or maybe in the kitchen looking out at the garden (if you have one)?
Also, I read a lot so would be reading when I felt up to it. Bath and hair wash, comfy clean clothes.
feel better soon, sounds like a really crappy rough couple of weeks 💐

MotherOfPuffling · 18/02/2023 14:59

Crap TV that I don’t need to watch, just be distracted by;
Ditto candy crush / sudoku on phone;
Do really bad crochet / knitting;
Scroll non-serious ‘news’ on phone;
Listen to music.

All helps me on bad days. Or the bad sections of OK days.

WeWereInParis · 18/02/2023 14:59

Re-watch greys anatomy for the umpteenth time.

MotherOfPuffling · 18/02/2023 14:59

Reading if you’re up to it. If you can’t concentrate enough for that then audiobooks

Oblomov23 · 18/02/2023 15:12

Bed, to sofa for tv, back to bed. Everything else can wait.

BriannaBurlesque · 18/02/2023 15:28

Fresh pillowcase.

Cooling flannel on forehead.

Close my eyes, and listen to a gentle guided imagery meditation audio.
Michael Sealey on Youtube is great.

Try and sleep as much as possible.

Sip water or very weak cordial often. Ice cubes to suck.

Eat whatever comforting foods I can stomach, preferably brought to me by someone else. If alone, then the simplest to grab. If I'm in the right frame of mind, vaguely healthy but often I regress to childhood favourites!
Reminds me of feeling nurtured.

Virtual dog walk for a change of scenery/nature, if you feel too weak to move from bed.

Hope you feel better soon Flowers

Watch a really soothing boxset on Netflix - Parks and Recreation, Superstore, The US Office, Schitts Creek - something funny and gentle. Or listen to podcasts (sometimes about such a tv show!)

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 18/02/2023 15:34

crochet. It’s low energy but feels productive and keep me “busy”.

amberedover · 18/02/2023 15:37

I like to browse hard copy catalogs.

Bunce1 · 18/02/2023 15:39

Get up. Shower/dress. Wash hair and make myself look nice (ish). Eat downstairs. You’ll be ready for going back to bed after that.

Can someone change the bedding for you? Open the windows and air out the room.

Watch The Office (American version) as it’s easy to watch and snooze too.

also scroll through tick-tock.

TeaBlanketBooks · 18/02/2023 15:39

Colouring.
I’m currently in a mental health unit and that is all I feel like doing apart from sleeping.

stopbeeping · 18/02/2023 15:45

As someone who's had to spend multiple stints in bed I totally feel you

So I get my husband to change the sheets for me because obviously if you're really sick wrestling with a fitted sheet is hell

I change my pyjamas into light leisure clothes for the day

Depending on how sick I might have a shower if not then I would have a bed wash basically

Breakfast on a tray with napkin and nicely laid

Flowers beside the bed

Tv on but only for a period of time not on all day making you feel nauseas

If you can book someone to come to the house to do something for you in bed like a massage or reiki or nails etc

Buy new Jim jams and something for when you are better

Book something for the future low cost but nice like a comedy show but a local one

Order a take away for dinner and go downstairs and have it on the sofa

Get a tray with legs so you can use it in bed

Candles

Journaling

Make a slideshow of your photos of amazing things
If you have an iPhone they can make memory videos automatically and it's so heart warming and charming to look back and see all the things you love and it's motivation for me to recover too

Take all the medicine you need including adequate painkillers

And repeating to myself over and over again
This will pass and I will cope

So much love it's utterly shit and I know how anxious, insecure and low I feel when I'm sick and stuck in my bed xxx

fizzyfood · 18/02/2023 15:46

Yea and biscuits in bed. Listen to the radio in bedroom with low sound and then I normally drop off

BriannaBurlesque · 18/02/2023 16:08

@stopbeeping
What a lovely, encouraging post.
I'm sorry you also have recurring stints of illness, and send you strength.

You, too, @TeaBlanketBooks
Flowers

Luckingfovely · 18/02/2023 19:21

So many lovely ideas here, thank you all so so much, I definitely needed a kick to try and make my own situation feel better rather than wallowing. I got up in super comfy clothes and watched some tv, and am loving the idea of the meditation to get me off to sleep a bit later Flowers wishing you all healthy times too x

I'm currently feeling like death warmed over.
I am sat in bed, under a duvet and 2 blankets with thick socks on, listening to a book from my echo show. I have a jug of squash, because dry throat. Occasionally loom knitting when my eyes aren't too tired.
Sleep seems to have gone by the wayside even more than usual.
I also shuffle into my kitchen now and then to make a hot drink with honey in it.

Luckingfovely · 18/02/2023 21:07

Aw @Caramelsmadfuzzytail I am sending sympathy and strong healing vibes!

I am back in bed, having eaten more chocolate than strictly necessary tonight but it cheered me up momentarily.

I must say a special thank you to @stopbeeping - I keep re-reading your post, and you are just lovely and I wish you well Smile
