Received a letter for HMRC which isn't mine...

This morning I received a letter from HMRC for a tax credit overpayment
It's not my name but my address
I don't get tax credits and never have
I'm worried sick
Will they send ballifs to my house ?
I'm assuming they've somehow gave the wrong postcode
How can I prove its not me?

I would send it back with "not known at this address". If it's not your name I wouldn't worry.

KangarooKenny · 18/02/2023 11:06

Take a picture if you do send it back, as proof.
Id ring them personally.

I'm worried because I receive Uc top up and
Don't want them to think this person lives here with me

just keep a copy of the council tax bill to hand. Show bailiffs that at the door and they will leave you alone.

Just put it in the bin and forget about it.
If another one comes, don't open it and send it back with 'not at this address'.

It could be a tax credit overpayment from years ago for the previous owner.

Noone is going to think you are defrauding the state. Bailiffs won't take away your stuff.

We had one about 6 months after we moved in to our current house for the previous owners. I'd just opened it in a pile of post so didn't spot that it wasn't ours at first, it was for quite a substantial sum so I just sealed it back up and wrote 'return to sender, not known at this address' and put it back in the postbox. Never heard anything else and we've lived here 14 years since so I really wouldn't worry yourself about it.

Awwlookatmybabyspider · 18/02/2023 11:29

Who a debt belongs to has to be proven. Bailiffs can't just come and take your stuff because it's the same address.. Surely you've got ID to prove who you are. Just call them Monday morning and tell them you thought the letter was intended for you (not an unreasonable thought as it came to your address) but just explain that you're not the person named on the letter and if they ask for evidence tell them you're willing to provide it.

Yeah I have drivers licence /utility bills etc
I'm just a worrier

Give HMRC a ring and explain what's happened. - but use a number on their website not any telephone number on the letter (in case it's a fake). It's either an error or some sort of scam/fraud. Either way, the thing to do is to let them know. Ignoring it is more likely to lead to a problem later.

Have you only moved into the property in the last couple of years?

Don't do this Confused
Call them and sort it out.

simplisooj · 18/02/2023 12:32

Yeah I will give them a ring on Monday
I've just tried but they are closed
I'm not going to worry
Hopefully will be okay

Just say return to sender snd post! Really not your business and nothing to do with you. I've had letters saying there's over £1000s owing on utility bills and I just return to sender.

Pinkfrogs45 · 18/02/2023 13:56

I had bailiffs show up at my door 1 year after moving in. Looking for a man who had some debt. They weren’t aggressive and really nice. Just explained I had no idea who it was and told them my name. They had my address for him so I assumed its either an old tenant or wrong address. They never bothered me again

with these types of letter you really should ring the company involved and tell them the correct billing address which should be on the letter as the address being provided with the utility . We have had this with BG , someone using our address and getting gas in a town about 45 miles away and not paying any bills because they never actually receive any .
