Throat hurts so much

pinotnow · 18/02/2023 02:45

Any tips gratefully received as I'm actually sobbing now. It hurts so much to swallow it's keeping me awake though cough has pretty much gone and now have runny nose instead. I have been taking ibuprofen and paracetamol but this dose (11.30pm) hasn't worked though it has been keeping it at bay through the day. I just want to sleep - ex needs me to collect teens a day early, so tomorrow and I've done none of the work I was meant to do this holiday and I'm so tired. Just a moan - I never recall throat pain like this in my life before!

Sucking ice cubes? I had an extremely sore throat with covid and it was horrendous.

DutifulDaughterWifeMother · 18/02/2023 02:58

Currently in the same boat & the only thing that has helped is gargling with salt (in water obviously) I must have done it over 10 times today & my throat is so much better. Just leave a cup by the bathroom sink & gargle as many times as u can. I really hope that works.

As soon as shops open Saturday morning buy diffflam throat rinse.

Have you honey and. Lemon you could make now to sip?

rockymountains · 18/02/2023 03:09

Poor thing, sore throats are the worst and I have one also!

1 tea spoon honey + 1 tea lemon lemon mix together and keep drinking throughout the day.

Also, honey alone helps. Some hot tea and if you have the white bumps then get a really toasted bread and eat it + pineapple is good.

And keep your neck wrapped up to keep it warm.

Also ice lollies are good to sooth the pain

Hope you get better soon!

Thanks all so much. Can't gargle salt without gagging (wuss) but ice cubes seem to help and can get honey and difflam tomorrow.

Suffering with the same just now. I'm finding roasting hot tea is easing it. Currently up having tea just now. Never felt anything like this before.

Warspite · 18/02/2023 05:27

Difflam is good.
TCP gargle was better for me in the end.
Sucking ice cubes.
painkillers regularly.
Ice packs on my glands which were up like golf balls in my neck.
Rest when you can.
Mine was horrendous. Absolutely horrendous and so painful, but slowly slowly, over 3 weeks, my glands started to subside & throat finally went back to normal.
Get well soon OP.

EarringsandLipstick · 18/02/2023 05:41

OP, you may need antibiotics.

VintageThoughts · 18/02/2023 05:55

TCP gargle is good.
If you can get to a chemist Dequidin is my go to.
Otherwise, honey is supposed to help but i hate it so would rather have a sore throat

Relaxingtime · 18/02/2023 06:05

Gp visit for antibiotics.
You may have a throat infection.

Thanks again all. Such a hard call with GPs. Think mine is better than a lot from what I read, but you have to decide between emergency, which will get you seen same day, or waiting about 2 weeks. Neither seems appropriate in this case but will have to see how it is on Monday when they reopen. Would feel silly classing a sore throat as an emergency though.

To add to possible symptom relievers in case anyone else needs them, have just found a hot shower eased it a bit.

If your symptoms are so bad you are sobbing, this counts as a GP “emergency”. I know it varies from place to place but I’d suggest 111 to get seen today if you can. I agree with pp that you might need antibiotics. They’ll soon be able to tell!
You can buy dispersible painkillers like co-codamol that might take the edge off for you. Hope you feel better soon.

I agree. Th one time this happened to me I had quite bad tonsillitis and needed antibiotics.
