Socks for child with sensory issues?

Dd (9) with sensory issues - currently seeking assessment for autism. Never had a huge problem with socks but always hated the ones with patterns as she found the inside of the socks irritated her. I've bought her plain cotton ones for years.

She now suddenly can't stand to wear any of her socks. I've tried to work out exactly what isn't working for her, thinking it may be the seam in the toe or the bit around the ankle but she's insisting it's the material she doesn't like. I'm sure you can only buy cotton socks and no other material?!

Does anyone have any suggestions on what we can try for her?

Bamboo socks are nice and soft. Maybe try them inside out in case it's the seams bothering her?

BadClown · 17/02/2023 22:12

Are tights an issue too? Just trying to work out if it’s the seem at the end, or the length/bit around the ankle :)

3girlsmama · 17/02/2023 22:13

I've bet there. Any chance it's different/new shoes rather than the socks? Or she's gone up a size and the socks feel too restrictive?ouu can get bamboo or cashmere socks or fleece ones and ones with brushed cotton inside.

I've *been there

We have simply eliminated socks for the time being. DD has a rotation of fake ugg boots which I stretched so the padding wasn't too much.

dinmin · 17/02/2023 22:15

Bamboo or viscose?
do you tumble dry the socks? Could have changed fabric or shrink them slightly if so…

ThinkAboutItTomorrow · 17/02/2023 22:17

My DD is similar and primark is the only ones she likes. It's the ankle part that works for her, I think the elastic's really loose.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 17/02/2023 22:17

Pop socks in the tights material?

Friend's daughter with profound sensory issues conceded these were wearable!

Sauvignonblanket · 17/02/2023 22:21

M&S do soft school socks - my DD had issues too. Bamboo is a good suggestions as well.

CrackedHeels2 · 17/02/2023 22:27

My son is autistic and he likes bamboo socks. He also really likes socks with separate toes - like gloves but for feet!

ThaliaLuxurySpa · 17/02/2023 22:27

Sorry...wrong link earlier.

These are they. Pricey, though her Mum said worth it for hassle-free dressing.

Definitely try the Marks and spencer ultimate comfort ones. They come in black, grey and white. https://www.marksandspencer.com/3-pairs-of-ankle-school-socks/p/clp60143012#intid=plpnav_pid_pg1pip48g2r16c1|prodflag_plp_ts_QPH_11

Rolypolyup · 17/02/2023 22:30

Socks without a tight ankle bit and minimal toe seam wierdness, no sparkly design with itchy insides and stringy bits that get loose and itch and tickle you. primark actually had some nice ones recently. Not sure what the name of them was but the description explained it- think it was along the lines of ultra soft something

User963 · 17/02/2023 22:31

DS gets annoyed with cotton socks gradually going stiff in the wash. He wears m and s womens sumptuously soft socks. The only go up to an 8 though so I might check out bamboo ones. The soft ones also shed a lot of sock fluff all over the house

SquigglePigs · 17/02/2023 22:34

I struggle with seams and particularly the ankles on socks. I get sock shop gentle grip bamboo socks. Bamboo is so much softer than cotton. I don't know what the options are with kids socks but if you can find something like that it might work.

bandbsmummy · 17/02/2023 22:36

DD (5) will only wear chenille socks without protest. Unfortunately we haven't found any navy ones for school so we argue about the super soft bamboo ones most days.
She is the same with trousers and will only wear 1 specific pair of primark fleece lined leggings.

plumduck · 17/02/2023 22:38

Bamboo socks.

Shampern · 17/02/2023 22:39

M & S do soft ones . My Dd refuses to wear anything else.

Spendonsend · 17/02/2023 22:39

Slightly different tact but do you stretch the fabric and warm it before putting them on (by rubbing between hands) and sometimes a foot massage first helps too.

WrongOrRightMove · 17/02/2023 22:44

Another vote for M&S ultimate comfort socks. Our ds has been wearing them for about 8 years now - read the reviews which generally agree with us all.

Bay2 · 17/02/2023 22:44

Another vote for the m and s seemless socks, my son likes the thicker/fluffier ones

Phineyj · 17/02/2023 22:49

We have socks from Sensory Smart which another poster recommended. They've gone down well.

LemonySippet · 17/02/2023 22:56

My daughter is autistic and has the same issue, socks are her biggest sensory problem. We buy bamboo socks from the sock shop, they do an amazing 5 for a fiver, they're excellent quality, seamless and come in all usual school colours. I bulk buy them and they arrive super quickly. Highly recommended. I've tried the M&S ones and various other places and none compare.

Stickytoastandhoney · 17/02/2023 23:00

The sock shop are doing 5 pairs of kids bamboo socks for £4.99
