Does anyone live in or near Farnham?

As title suggests really 😆
DD and myself are staying there for a week.Just wondering if there is any where nice to eat? As hotel doesn't do food of an evening .
Things to do during the day for myself as DD will be doing work experience.
Any supermarkets, petrol stations ?
Sorry for the spanish inquisition we are travelling from the Northwest and I'm very used to everything being on my doorstep.

Wondering if any mumsnetters have any pearls of wisdom or hidden gems for me to visit.
Thanks in advance.

Will you have a car? Lots of lovely places around Farnham. Hideous one way system in the tiny town its surprising just how bad it can be. Plus West Street is closed which won't help.

Lonelycrab · 17/02/2023 19:02

Live nearby and visit fairly often.

You'll be fine. It has supermarket’s, it has petrol stations. It’s a busy town in the SE not the outer Hebrides! Plenty of places to eat there, there is a Bill’s there which are always ok when I’ve been. Heard good things about the giggling squid too, but not been myself. Enjoy your stay.

AlmostSummer21 · 17/02/2023 19:06

I used to live there, but too long ago to recommend restaurants etc, I was there the other week though & loads of places looked nice (we weren't staying for dinner)

Farnham Maltings usually has interesting things going on!

Will you be in the centre?
will you have a car?

Veena’s kitchen for amazing Thai food (it’s opposite Sainsbury’s).
Tiayias at the Fox - delicious Greek food in a nice pub setting. A bit out of Farnham but a short drive.
There’s a big Waitrose, a Sainsbury’s and Lidl. It’s a compact town centre.
You could visit the Surrey Sculpture Park (book online first), Waverley Abbey or go further afield.

Yes I will be driving.
My only experience of the area is Google maps 😏hence the thread. From the pictures it looked very rural .
Thanks for the heads up about one way system The hotel is a 20 min drive from town but I was hoping to walk it a few times

Caesars camp just above Farnham is great for walks or just seeing the countryside, excellent views from the viewpoint. Frensham ponds and Alice Holt forest are nice too. These are all around 5-10 min drive from the town centre.

Sixmonthson · 17/02/2023 19:21

Chawton is only just down the road with The Jane Austen House Museum and Chawton House - both really beautiful and interesting places to visit especially as the snowdrops will be out!

ThomasWaghornsConeHat · 17/02/2023 19:23

It's not rural but it's surrounded by lovely countryside. There are so many chain restaurants and independents. There is a small sainsbury's and a larger one just on outskirts that has a petrol station and cafe. There's loads of car parks in the town too. Some nice shops in town too. Its not a huge town so no shopping centre but plenty to do and see. A bit far out by the Mill in Elsted is my favourite pub. Not cheap but it's not a cheap area. There is Zizzi and places like that in the town centre

shazkevincarrotlover · 17/02/2023 19:28

Thank you everyone.
I'm looking forward to it.
Looks like there Will be plenty to keep me occupied.I live in a semi rural area myself which only has a Spar and 2 pus but not far from busy city centre I was just wondering if it was much the same.
Looks like it's a bustling town centre then which has put my mind at ease.

Isn't there a castle there? I seem to remember an acquaintance getting married at the castle

ThreeLegged · 17/02/2023 19:32

A lovely town as PPs have said above.
Beautiful countryside, prettier to the south, lots of great walks. Frensham Great and Little Ponds are both worth a visit. The Sculpture Park at Churt about 15 minutes drive south from Farnham is interesting for a couple of hours and the Bel and Dragon pub opposite it is lovely for lunch or coffee.
Watts Gallery and Watts Chapel about the same distance to the west of Farnham are also great.

The Packhouse is a 10 mins drive outside Farnham. Lovely to spend a morning looking at vintage furniture etc. Nice cafe but often full or booked...could book in advance

This if a cracking country pub with fab lunches

Avoid bird world!

Thecatisboss · 17/02/2023 19:52

@redbonnet there is a castle once owned by Bishops of Winchester. I was born in Farnham but moved away 30 years ago.

Frensham ponds are lovely to walk around.

Worth going to the Haskins garden centre next to Bird World if you like scones - they do massive scones and a great range of cakes

AuntieDolly · 17/02/2023 20:12

Lots of coffee shops in the town centre. Good museum and art gallery. Second the Packhouse for a browse and Watts Gallery has a great cafe

ThreeLegged · 17/02/2023 20:13

Depending on where you are staying and how far you want to drive, Guildford (about 25 mins east of Farnham) also has lots to offer. Much bigger and buzzier although it also has a hideous one way system! Lots of shops, cafés and restaurants, Yvonne Arnaud theatre, cinema, a castle (just a tower with gardens but worth a wander) and a cracking local history museum!

shazkevincarrotlover · 17/02/2023 20:26

Staying at Farnham House , I don't mind travelling a little bit out of Farnham but didn't want to go too far as will have to collect DD and I'm a pansy when I dont know where Im Going 😆

Everything is still on your doorstep. It's not remotely rural, it runs into Aldershot which in turn runs into Farnborough which in turn runs into Camberley...it's quite the conurbation. But there is lots of nice countryside and lots of history.

Guildford isn't far away and has lots to do. You can avoid the one way system there by parking in the Farnham Road car park next to the station (it's not a station car park so not ludicrously expensive).

If you want a longer drive you could go to Windsor. Petersfield is quite nice too, as is Alton. Alresford is also down the road and has the Watercress Way walks. Winchester is also only half an hour away down the A31.

There is also a regular train to London if you wanted a day trip.

Oh ok well that's very easy for places on the A31 - Guildford, Alresford, Winchester and Alton all very easy to get to and impossible to get lost :)

Brilliant.

I live near Farnham and a few of my friends live there. Recently went to Bears cafe/restaurant and thought it was quite good and reasonably priced.
