Mid March, just DH and I. Its our first time using a house sitter so wouldn't feel comfortable extending, this is a test run to see how we all manage!

Arriving and leaving at around lunchtime, hand baggage only. No accommodation booked yet, it's on my to do list.

There's so much to see and do that it's hard to whittle down what we absolutely must do, and I'm also keen on any hidden gems anyone is happy to share 🙂

margaritarita, I hadn't realised before that a house sitter sounded so grand! In the spirit of full disclosure, she's from the Trusted Housesitters site and I suspect is lured to our very modest end of terrace as she has family in the area, and our spectacular coastline 😉 Her purpose is so that DDogs don't have to go into kennels rather than the care of the mansion house.

These ideas are fantastic, thank you all. I'm actually getting quite excited now. We've got a "big" trip planned later in the year so Venice has become slightly eclipsed. My guide book arrived today so I've been mooching through that and making copious notes!

I also have every intention of arriving from the airport by boat 😆

So good to see you have a great sense of humour!

Enjoy the trip.

We had good experiences a few years back with company called 'walks of Italy'. One option was guided walking tour including entry to museum plus gondola ride. Was dubious initially as not keen organised fun but was actually excellent and good value. Native guide lots of interesting history and small group plus tips for self directed walk next day in Jewish quarter.

Thank you evelyn that's really helpful, and probably a good idea to maximise our time away 🙂

You’re welcome. Hope you have a lovely time..
Two more things for what it’s worth - I had been gifted some money by my father with strict exhortation that it was to be spent on frivolity. I used it to book a private boat transfer from airport to our hotel (took us to outside step at our hotel and straight in to lobby!) It was fabulous and worth every penny!! (If you have Netflix etc watch ‘A Discovery of Witches’ - some of the scenes are in Venice and include speeding towards the city over the sea).
Lovely though our central hotel was, it was quite typically ‘old’ Italian in having very few power points and absolutely nowhere to plug in a hairdryer near a mirror. Given the elegance of the native Venetians compared to we sweaty tourists, I was surprised not to spot one hairdresser anywhere either centrally in tourist bit or on our walk to Jewish quarter.

I always stay in Cannaregio, there's lots of hotels and nice restaurants and it's not as busy as some areas.

I've never booked a water taxi, but have used Alilaguna from the airport, but the last few times I've just got the bus as it's much quicker. One time I had to as the lagoon was a no go due to Aqua Alta, it was incredible! Took me forever to wade through knee high water to St Marks Square.

I just like wandering and seeing where I end up. Have done the Doges Palace secret itinerary tour, and did one prebook the basilica as the queues have always been awful (apart from Sept 2020!).

There's an amazing restaurant on Murano that all the local workmen go to at lunchtime. Simple food but so tasty, and very cheap for Venice. It's in a little square down an ally that's just down from the coop.
