Refund of childcare vouchers

JustStuck · 16/02/2023 16:10

Hi,

I am entitled to a refund of my childcare vouchers.

It is a fair amount that accumulated over the years.

Can anyone advise how I can calculate the amount I will receive after the appropriate tax deductions? Or know of an online calculator.

Thanks

I had my Edenred ones refunded. I hadn't used them all and my childcare needs changed, I was also leaving my company at the time. They did it with minimal fuss!

My company wouldn't allow refunds of Edenred ones and this was made clear upfront but we were allowed to vary the amount each month by letting payroll
know so I didn't accrued too many. We were able to use them on holiday sports/drama camps till the DCs were early teens and no longer needed or wanted to go to these.

How come you all accrue much more than you need?

We started saving them up from when my child was about 2, the intention was that I would be going back to work when they went to school, that didn’t happen due to my childs condition, it was always next year I’ll get back to work. We stopped saving them but we’re had lots accrued. We used to take them to after school club once a week in the holidays to use them but she hated it.

DH (Mid Yorks Chamber of Commerce) and I (Edenred) both had our vouchers refunded after Lockdown 1, during which time we'd not been able to spend what we accumulated and DS left primary school. This may have been special circumstances though.

Another one saying they can’t be refunded I’m afraid - I accumulated them over one fo the covid years and just gave them to my childminder in the end because there was nothing else I could do

That’s not true across the board, I got mine refunded.

Lockdown!

We also carried on paying the same amount after dc1 left primary school, so we could have a "free" year to cover Dc2's last year at primary.

DH asked for about £500 worth of Edenred to be refunded (and so paid tax on them) fairly recently. These were the old style childcare vouchers (DD is now year 11) in case that makes a difference.

We used to use them for summer holiday clubs and PGL holidays.

Vouchers are difficult to get refunded as others have said. However if you use the newer tax free childcare choices scheme via HMRC you can be refunded back to your bank account

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 17/02/2023 08:26

This is interesting and timely! We have loads of Edenred that we’d ideally get refunded.
NHS employee so would be very interested to hear if anyone NHS managed it successfully.
So far I haven’t even managed to find the person I need to speak to….

ChildcareVoucherPain · 17/02/2023 13:19

@GnarlyOldGoatDude, I work for the NHS and managed to get a refund - you need to get both the childcare voucher company (mine was a different one to yours) and your Trust to agree to a refund though. It will help if you have any extenuating circumstances, and if you're a member of a union, they might be able to help as well. It took a while for me, and it was frustrating, but I got a refund in the end. Good luck.

Edenred won't refund childcare vouchers. I didn't think any companies did because of the tax implications. Are you sure OP?

Edenred refunded mine...
My company managed the process for me, a few forms I needed to fill and after payroll did the needed calculations I received the refund in my pay

ChildcareVoucherPain · 17/02/2023 13:24

Yes, my partner also got a refund for Edenred vouchers, so it's definitely possible.

Boomboom22 · 17/02/2023 13:30

It's better to use tax free childcare now that exists.

MintJulia · 17/02/2023 13:37

My provider wouldn't refund either but ds goes to an independent senior school, and they took them to pay for French trip, geography field trip and some of German field trip.

custardbear · 17/02/2023 13:42

I have Edenred refunded through my employer - once I get over £2k banked I take some out (in case they do stop lol 😆) but I do use mine even now, children are 14 and 10, for extra lessons

GnarlyOldGoatDude · 17/02/2023 13:56

@ChildcareVoucherPain thank you, that gives me hope!

I had to fight tooth and nail to get mine refunded (Care4). Eventually managed it during lockdown on the basis we couldn't use them. It was a relief as we had a few thousand accumulated.

Can you provide more details please. Ours are with care-4. We are unable to use as our DD does not want to do more clubs. What reasons did you give that they accepted. Thank you
