Meals in a fancy hotel alone

Hi all,

I have an important assignment due for uni in the coming weeks, and concentrating at home is nigh on impossible. So, ive checked myself in to a fancy local hotel for the night, to crack on without interruptions. I cant work in the library its too quiet, i need background noise, but of my choosing not my kids running around that deranged chickens!

Ive looked on the website, and much to my annoyance, it doesn't appear they offer a room service/in room dining option which i was hoping for! I cant go to the restaurant alone, and tbh i wanted to eat whilst continuing to browse endless medical journals.

Would it be frowned upon to order food in to a fancy (by my standards) hotel?

No I don't think so if they don't do room service. Otherwise bring supplies? They usually have a mini fridge and a kettle in the room.

QuertyGirl · 16/02/2023 14:44

Are you there now?

Ring reception and ask for room service

And why can't you eat in the restaurant alone?

QuertyGirl · 16/02/2023 14:45

Take your laptop to the restaurant?

I leave soon. I just dont want to eat in a resturant alone, i know some people may be comfortable with that, but im not, at all.

@Dyslexicwonder i meant order in from else where, like ubereats something to the hotel?

ZeroFuchsGiven · 16/02/2023 14:46

I have stayed in hotels with no room service but they have had no issues (when asked nicely) with me taking meals and drinks back to my room.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 16/02/2023 14:46

Why can’t you go to the restaurant alone? Many high end restaurants would refuse a Deliveroo (etc) driver.

BooCrew · 16/02/2023 14:46

Ring reception and ask? Or take yourself out to a chain, no-one will care if you're on your laptop.

Why can't you go to the restaurant alone though? Is it very fancy?

lacey79 · 16/02/2023 14:48

I just dont want to sit in a restaurant alone, it would make me feel very uncomfortable, ill ask at check in in i can order from the restaurant to eat in my room at all. Going elsewhere to a chain isnt possible, i dont drive and its not in a town or city, its on the outskirts

OP posts:
BooCrew · 16/02/2023 14:49

But why can't you eat alone, assuming they're ok with you working while eating? I can understand if it were a super high end Michelin star restaurant, all hushed voices and white gloves, but if it's just a nice hotel restaurant there will surely be other people staying on their own on business trips?

It's a perfectly normal thing to do.

Thats fine in your comfortable with that, im not, regardless of how many other people are in there eating alone. I want to go sit in my comfy clothes, work away, eat at my own pace, have trashy tv on in the back ground and enjoy an interrupted nights sleep in a big comfortable bed to myself, and wake up refreshed to proof read and edit it tomorrow.

*uninterrupted

I know your personal growth aim this tons round is your assignment… but why not challenge yourself another time to sit in a restaurant alone? It really should be no big deal at all, and you should place limitations on yourself. It wouldn’t matter even if you were the only one, but trust me - loads of people do it! I’ve spent years on business travel doing it, seeing others do it. Don’t accept you restricting you.

Presuming you are not staying at the Ritz, loads of people get Deliveroo to hotels - you’ll see the drivers yourself probably!

Good luck with the assignment.

Utilitaparking · 16/02/2023 14:56

I'd say it's absolutely fine to order deliveroo/Uber eats, I've done it to loads of hotels some on the more luxury end and never had a problem.

ApolloandDaphne · 16/02/2023 14:59

In your case I would go to Marks and buy loads of deli things or one of their lovely salads. Plus some nice crisps and maybe a can or two of G&T and I'd take a plate and cutlery etc with me. Then I could pick away to my hearts content.

frozendaisy · 16/02/2023 15:04

I am sure you could ask for a hotel meal to be sent to your room OP.

Just tell the receptionist or concierge the truth.

Takox · 16/02/2023 15:04

I ordered Deliveroo to a 4 star hotel yesterday- asked driver to call me when he arrived and went down to reception to pick it us from the driver. No one was bothered. The restaurant forgot to put the requested cutlery in the bag so I had to go back down to the fancy restaurant in the hotel and ask for cutlery. Which was provided happily. You are paying, you can do what you like (within reason).

Thank you, this is what i want to do but wasnt sure if it was ok

@ApolloandDaphne In hindsight i wish i had done just that, however ive now left it far to late to go to anywhere nice and bring my own food, it would waste over an hour of time to get to a nice shop, my only option locally is a tesco meal deal and i dont want that lol

I travel a lot for work and frequently Uber eat deliveries. I’m also cheeky enough to pop into the restaurant or bar and ask for cutlery 😊

I generally buy a glass of wine to take to my room and have with the food and no one has ever minded.

Conkerqueen · 16/02/2023 15:10

lord above leave her alone she doesn’t want to sit in the restaurant!

RebulahConundrum · 16/02/2023 15:11

It'll be fine to order ubereats, everyone does it. I know what you mean about the restaurant though. Even if you're fine eating alone in a fancy restaurant, sometimes you don't want to have to wear nice clothes and sit up straight and have table manners. I work away a lot and that's the last thing I want to do after a long day working, even if it's just at a Beefeater. Just get ubereats, the hotel staff will barely even notice never mind care

That sounds perfect! Thank you

In typical MN fashion, OP has said that she would not feel comfortable dining alone in the restaurant and yet posters want to discuss that instead of answering her question about food delivery to a hotel.

OP, I feel sure that you can order something to be delivered. I have done what you are doing a couple of times in my life when I really needed to concentrate, and I didn't want to eat in the restaurant either, mainly because it would break my flow. I had a room service option so not the same situation as yours, but it's perfectly reasonable for you to want to eat in your room for whatever reason. Good luck with your project!

MaverickGooseGoose · 16/02/2023 15:24

Uber eats is fine!

I get it. Fair enough! I love eating in a big comfy hotel bed on my own, but I also live eating in restaurants alone and just wanted to reassure you it's perfectly normal.

Anyway. Ask reception but I'm sure it's fine. I've only stayed in one hotel that didn't allow takeaways to be delivered, and they were very keen on their very swanky restaurant and clearly wanted everyone to eat there.

This. Explain to reception you’re there to work, I’m sure they’ll sort you a room meal.
