Interview cancelled last minute again

Meltedcheeses · 16/02/2023 13:55

So after last week have an interviewer no show to the interview today I had an interview email an hour before the interview to ask to reschedule.

This guy would report into me. I've already interviewed with the CEO.

What a terrible impression to give your potential new boss.

He was really casual in his tone and I'm frankly not keen on managing someone who is so disorganised (he said he was busy and forgot to update his calender) and rude.

Is it worth chatting to HR or do I need to play this cool.

Not sure what your final question means, but do you still want the job?

Meltedcheeses · 16/02/2023 13:59

I'm not sure....I definitely want to continue with the process.

I just meant that this guy hasn't rescheduled the meeting so I currently have no time booked to see him...is it worth updating HR that I've spoken to all direct reports except this guy and I'm expecting an invitation for him on Monday morning?

I was responsible for scheduling these and I don't want HR thinking the delay is me.

If you don't feel you want to work with this guy then you can withdraw from the process

Your posts are confusing. Are you the interviewer or job applicant?

purplecorkheart · 16/02/2023 14:02

Sorry am I misunderstanding you. You are being interviewed by the person who will be reporting to you if you get the job?

ApolloandDaphne · 16/02/2023 14:02

Do an e mail copying in all the relevant parties saying it's a shame todays interview has had to be cancelled and that you look forward to speaking to X soon. Or something like that but more professional! Let's everyone know you have been cancelled and it wasn't your fault.

Oblomov23 · 16/02/2023 14:06

I'm confused? Why would you be interviewing your direct report?

Meltedcheeses · 16/02/2023 14:08

Sorry for being unclear...I'm a bit annoyed.

I am being interviewed by someone who would report into me if I got the job. It's fairly common in senior hires that team fit is assessed in this way and it gives me the chance to assess the talent I'll inherit and gives the team a chance to express concerns or feedback to the CEO (who I would report into).

The interviewer who cancelled would report into me. For reference the CEO turned up on time without any rescheduling...just this junior guy seems unable to do so.

@ApolloandDaphne that's a good suggestion....hard to read the culture as it's a US company but this may be the best option

I don't bloody believe it!!!!

A separate interview scheduled for tomorrow with another company (already rescheduled once).is now being rescheduled to Monday as the interviewer has "just realised she is off work tomorrow"

How are people so disorganised???????

Well, I guess if you get the job your first task can be to fire this guy and get someone in who can actually manage the basics.

thecatsthecats · 16/02/2023 14:18

I've ignored red flags like this before, and I don't any more.

Unless you are explicitly being hired to improve a badly-performing or managed company's problems, I wouldn't go ahead.

I didn't get hired by a company and had feedback that they, "Weren't sure I'd manage the pace of the organisation". Because I said it was a shame that I didn't get a chance to ask my questions at the end of the interview.

They had hour long interviews scheduled back to back including a 15m presentation and about 15 planned questions. And they were 10m late for me, but tried to get back on schedule afterwards.

Say no to employers who don't have their shit together!

Trisolaris · 16/02/2023 14:19

I had similar for my current job. As previous poster. I emailed the guy asking to let me know a more convenient time to rearrange and cc’ing in hiring manager so they could see we hadn’t managed to speak yet.

Hahahaha. He has not made a good impression having seen his LinkedIn and CV and now this.....

It's given me pause for thought. This guy currently reports into the CEO but they're bringing in a more senior person rather than promote him....I'm not putting up with any game playing or lack of co-operation.

I'll approach our meeting with an open mind and hope for the best....just felt grumpy as rushed to make the interview and get ready and felt annoyed. I will calm down. It's not the end of the world and not good to read too much into it but I'm definitely getting a vibe.

OK thanks I'm going to follow you and do this. But as hiring manager is CEO think I will copy HR instead as she is responsible for making sure the process completes.

It sounds as if this guy might not be happy about someone coming in above him. Maybe he put his hand up for promotion and didn't get it ?
It seems a really weird way to go about things.... getting someone more junior who will report into the new employee to interview them !
An interview with a potential peer, or a final "meet the team" more informal interview but never come across a junior team member interviewing someone for a more senior role.
He's certainly not starting on the right foot if you were to get the role. Hopefully he has no say in the final decision.

Iceicebabytoocold · 16/02/2023 14:51

So, you are being interviewed for a role and part of the process is for you to be interviewed by the people who report in to this role, is that right?

if so, that is really odd. I have worked in HR for years and I have never heard this happen before, even more surprising is that you need to arrange these said interviews. What a strange approach.

Yesthatismychildsigh · 16/02/2023 15:06

I’m guessing he wants/wanted the job

Meltedcheeses · 16/02/2023 16:30

Good points...thanks for your thoughts!

So I'm not sure whether interview is the right word....

It's a 1 2 1 with direct reports

The others fired questions at me
Quite technical questions relating to their specialisms. And took notes!

I don't find meet the team sessions unusual in fact for me they've been fairly normal

The role and weight it plays in selection I am not sure

I think yes he is hoping to avoid this situation, possibly deter me and that this behaviour will continue over several months

I emailed him copying HR asking politely for him to confirm a rescheduled time

Had an immediate reply from both him and HR

If I'm right his attitude won't be a surprise and I've hopefully handled it firmly but kindly

Hopefully we can bring a lot of positivity when we do meet tomorrow!!

Your post is really muddled was the no show the interviewer. And when you say again did he cancel before. And why was he interviewing his potential boss.
