Finding out when a person died - in last few years?

I'm trying to find information on the year a person (relative) died. It would have been after 2009. The free family tree websites have only let me search BMD records to 2007.

I've found the local register office but there's no search facility there.

Thanks in advance.

Possibly a daft question, but have you tried googling their name and last known address? There will often be information that comes up though you may not be able to narrow it down to your relative without paying a website like 192.com. If you know their address you can usually view the electoral roll at the local council offices/local library. They will only be on there up until they died unless someone committed fraud. Local history libraries have things like old telephone directories and if they were listed you can see when they stopped being listed. Once you've got two or three sources of information pointing to the same year that's a pretty good guide.

You can go to probatesearch.service.gov.uk

Yes, I've Google searched and checked obituaries for the local area. They used to be on 192.com, some years ago, but there's no trace of them there now.

I tried the probate search and nothing came up for various years.

Thanks for the replies so far

The other thing to try is local Facebook groups in the area where they lived. They may have friends who are group members or those friends may have relatives who are.

If you know where they died you should be able to apply to the local register office for the certificate and they should conduct the search for you and supply the certificate. If not, try calling the General Register Office in Southport. Failing that you should be able to access the later [after 2006] death indexes on microfiche in various archives around the country. For example in London they are at The British Library and also Westminster City Archives in St. Ann's Street.
Hope this helps.

Would billiongraves.com/ help?

If you want to message me with details of the person you are trying to find about, ie name, rough age, where they lived/died, I will have a look on Ancestry to see if I can find anything. Some of their records go up to 2014.

Have you tried searching the death announcements in their local newspaper? Usually available online

If you're in Scotland births, deaths and marriages are at Scotland's People, free to search.

Ancestry’s index listings are often more up to date, might help you narrow it down before contacting the local registrar to check if the certificate is the right one.

You can search directly on the gro site. i think they go up to 2020.
