Is this normal now when filling out things to do with Sex/gender?

Went onto our work online page where you can view wages etc and came across a section called Confidential Information which I'd never noticed before.

You can provide details in the drop down boxes such as Religion,Marital status and Sex Identifier.

For Woman it also says in brackets ( including Transgender Female)
and then the equivalent for men.

Is this the same in all companies? Shouldn't it be separate?

I'm a woman and always have been so why am I sharing my sex on a form with someone who isn't?

I'm expecting to get my arse handed to me here but I just don't thing its right.

I agree with you. No idea if it’s the norm now though.

I work for a school academy

yes, it is very common. And it means that the data they are collecting on their employees is meaningless if they want to use it for reporting on things like the Sex Gender Pay Gap.

You could ask why they are collecting this data.

MadeOfSteel · 16/02/2023 10:38

It's becoming concerningly common.
The Scottish census last year included something very similar that I had to find a way round.

Beamur · 16/02/2023 10:40

Not unusual.
Also renders data collected not fit for purpose. Will obfuscate data both for women/men and transgender employees.

AutumnCrow · 16/02/2023 10:43

I'd be interested to know why they are collecting personal data that's not fit for purpose and cannot be meaningfully processed.

Wrappedupina5poundnote · 16/02/2023 10:45

What’s ´transgender female’ supposed to mean though? That’s confusing.
Transman = female sexed person who prefers to present as a man.
Transwomen = male sexed person who prefers to present as a women.
Which one is ´transfender female’ supposed to be? Terrible form design.

SomeCommonThing · 16/02/2023 10:45

The last one I filled out (NHS) asked for male/female/other followed with "is this the gender you were assigned at birth" which I crossed out and changed to "sex recognised at birth".

mindutopia · 16/02/2023 10:47

Yes, completely normal, as it should be. It's the standard in demographic data collection (I'm a social scientist). Because it's a question about someone's gender, not their biological sex. It's been practice in my field for years.

mindutopia · 16/02/2023 10:49

I will add though that the language 'transgender female' is incorrect from a demographic perspective. It isn't how the question should be phrased. It should be woman (including trans woman) and man (including trans man). Someone has just done a bad copy/paste job.

PrincessHoneysuckle · 16/02/2023 10:50

It's weird.
So I feel like HR would look at my details if needed and think oh Mrs Honeysuckle might be a woman, might be trans.?
There's no logic apart from to make it easier for a Trans person to not have to reveal that that's what they are.

But mindutopia I don't have a gender. I only have a sex. Everyone has a sex, and it's a protected characteristic so possibly reportable, but not everyone has a gender, which is not a protected characteristic so therefore not reportable.

I do not subscribe to gender ideology, so where and how would you record my status for your stats? Or would you just guess?
