Moving school

Hi. I'm moving my son's school, it's will be a in year transfer. He is in reception. Just wondering from others who have done this how long it took? It says on the council website 10-15 days but wondering how accurate that actually is. Was also wondering from others who have done this is their child was ok with the move or was it a disaster 😬

Do you have a place at the school you want to change to? I imagine it can take time to ascertain whether there is a place in the year group you need and the receiving school has to say whether that is the case.

I've moved mine, it took a week from finding out if there was space, taking the DC for a school visit to see how they felt about it and then accepting a space.
I've also seen children move from the school I work in and it's usually very quick unless there are complications like EHCPs.

Oh meant to say mine were fine with the move. I think it's easier the younger they are, but even my older one has had no issues at all.

Ours took 6 months for a place to come up, then 2 weeks to actually do the transfer (but probably could've done in 1 if we didn't have to sort childcare). We were however prepared and expected to keep him at his existing school until the place came up as we'd only moved 2 mile away. If that's not an option the council have to find you something, but it might not be your first choice.

I've just done this recently, took a week for my application to be downloaded and then 15 days to be offered a place. She starts Monday.

We did it last year (though dd was in Y4 at the time). It was absolutely fine. It took about a week for someone to actually push the button and for her to be offered a place. It was for a house move though, so we weren't actually moving house for another month, but I'm sure we could have started right away if we had been local. It was no big deal for her at all. I would imagine in reception it's going to be different because they take longer to settle. But she literally had all new best friends within a week and it was like she'd always been at that school.

@Bluevelvetsofa I've only applied for a space today but have called the council who have told me there is availability. My son is so anxious about going back to his current school I may have to keep him off until the place is accepted so was wondering how long the wait is. I wonder if I called and explained the situation with his anxiety about his current school that they would do it a little quicker 😬
