How long does it take you to recover from the flu these days?

I am recovering from the flu and feel SO rotten. It's not Covid- I did a test- but it feels like a really bad bout of it. Been 7 days so far and I still can't walk more than 30 minutes. Which is unusual for me. I have had my flu shot too.

Is there a new superflu bug about? Pre the pandemic, I used to be up and about in a few days.

I’m on day 8 and have never felt so awful in my life! I haven’t managed to leave the house yet, but I’m attempting a walk to town tomorrow. I also had flu jab! It’s been absolutely classic flu symptoms - quick onset, chills, temperature, muscle pain. Left with a nasty cough and totally wiped out!

Proper flu? Ages. It took me months to recover fully, and I was super-fit and in my 20s when I had it. It's a nasty illness.

I would say that’s pretty standard for flu! Expect a good 3 weeks I would say before you’re feeling slightly human again.

3 weeks! Yikes. This is definitely proper flu. Hope you feel better soon @InglouriousBasterd . I have always been able to shake off the flu easily in the past but there seem to be more nasty bugs about.

I was knocked out with it at Christmas.
Was staying with friends 5 hours away for a week, I was there for 5 weeks as I was so unwell and couldn't manage the drive home.

Flu? Took me two weeks minimum twenty years ago.

It's not a special super flu, unfortunately you are just being too optimistic.

GETTINGLIKEMYMOTHER · 15/02/2023 16:33

Proper flu will knock your stuffing right out for a good 3 weeks or more. If it doesn’t, it’s not flu, just a bad cold.

megletthesecond · 15/02/2023 16:41

I've only had flu once, over 20 years ago. Took about two weeks to get back to normal. I was very fit at the time.
That is why I get a flu jab.

ureterr1blemuriel · 15/02/2023 16:44

I think I had mild-ish flu late last year or a terrible virus - was in bed/on the sofa for a week, wasn’t up for the 10 min each way school run for another two weeks after. I’ve not been that ill since childhood & I had the flu jab as I work for the NHS. Normally my immune system is strong so I was completely caught out.

I hope you feel better soon

That's a myth. Flu can be mild or even asymptomatic just like Covid or a cold.

I lost January to it. No idea if it was flu as no test but after a week of fever and fatigue my lungs felt like they did with covid. Full of glue. I couldn't take more than a shallow breath and couldn't walk across the room I was so short of breath. I had two lots of ABs (because I have a lung condition and have to have them even if it's viral) and a course of steroids.
Had my flu jab so either this was a strain not covered or it was another virus.

RuthW · 15/02/2023 17:57

Flu is a minimum of 2 weeks to recover. Any less and it's prob not flu.
