peanut snacks that don't taste of peanut?

DC is growing out of his peanut allergy and his doctor ordered him to eat peanuts often, preferably daily. Trouble is, he hates the taste. Peanut butter is a massive no-no, won't eat nuts themselves, snickers bars or M&Ms either. So far I have found one breakfast cereal he's happy to eat, but looking for alternatives.

Any suggestions for foods that have a decent amount of peanut, but no strong taste?

I hate peanuts, but love crunch nut cornflakes.

Also Five Guys uses peanut oil to fry their chips.

BamBamBilla · 15/02/2023 09:11

Blended into smoothies
Date and nut protein bars

Peanut oil is the only way I'd voluntarily eat peanuts. Not due to allergies, but I dislike the taste and texture.
The only way I really eat nuts at all is if they are ground. So, could you try adding ground peanuts into things? Not sure what the taste would be like.

Would he eat the peanut butter that’s combined with chocolate spread or jam? They do different ones in Aldi.

Orangello · 15/02/2023 09:41

Trouble is, he needs to eat decent amounts, so just a sprinkle of ground nuts won't do, or anything where there is just a few % of nuts included.

You can buy peanut powder and mix it in with things like bolognaise and ice cream.

CatOnTheChair · 15/02/2023 09:49

I think you are probably looking for the impossible then. High %, but low taste.
Is some better than none? Or is a decent amount once a week preferable if the doctors desired large amount daily isn't going to happen?

BrieAndChilli · 15/02/2023 09:50

chicken satay?
banana and peanut butter smoothie
muffins/cakes with peanut butter icing (so will be sweeter)
crunchy nut cornflakes

Have you tried both smooth and crunchy peanut butter? there is such a variety - the standard supermarket peanut butter tastes and feels very different to the organic ones

Galadriel90 · 15/02/2023 09:51

Maybe try toast with peanut butter and strawberry jam. My peanut disliking child likes this combination.

This, I reallt like adding peanut butter powder to noodles etc and you can't really taste massive peanut butter when mixed with other flavours, it just a creaminess.

I really don't like peanuts/peanut butter or peanut butter flavoured things. Don't especially like any nuts tbh but really have a thing for reeses peanut butter cups. Wouldn't say they don't taste of peanuts, they do but the chocolate makes them much more tolerable. Might be worth a try ...

So most dietitians/allergy consultants advise to eat ground peanuts, peanut butter or peanut puffs in this situation as the peanut content is high and the protein is exposed. Have they given you an amount that he needs to consume each week? I would grind that much each week and then sprinkle it in as many meals as possible to not impact the taste too much. That we you know he's getting the quantity.

I'm in a similar situation with my son and he LOVES the peanut puffs. Would eat a tonne of them if allowed

JenniferBarkley · 15/02/2023 10:16

@Sofarsogood123 could I ask where you get the peanut butter puffs? Our consultant recommended Bamba for our non-allergic child but we haven't been able to find them.

OP, you probably know this but I don't think peanut oil will necessarily cut it, apparently some with allergies can have it.

We were given a recipe for a banana/peanut butter "ice-cream", would he eat that?

Peanut butter cups are a good idea, they're more salty than peanutty.

Orangello · 15/02/2023 10:18

thank you all, some good ideas. Any peanut butter is a no - it's the texture as well as taste.
I need to get the exact amounts but they finished his test with almost a cup full of the 35% peanut puff cereal, so that's what the doctor recommended he eats daily, or a few M&Ms (he doesn't like those).
Will try some Reeses and see what cereal bars are out there. He's not a fan of smoothies but yogurt with peanut butter powder might work.

JenniferBarkley health food shops often have all kinds of peanut puffs

We use the cheeky monkey peanut puffs. Can definitely get them from Ocado but I guess other supermarkets have them too

karmakameleon · 15/02/2023 10:26

Would he eat biscuits? These peanut butter cookies are easy to make.

Sofarsogood123 · 15/02/2023 10:31

Energy balls might work too. Can hide the ground peanut amongst all other flavours. Our allergy consultant gave me a recipe and I think Solid Starts have lots of recipes too

OP I feel your child's pain. I hate all peanut but especially peanut butter. Smeary toddler peanut hands everywhere is my worst nightmares. But that's the life I've got to live. Will obviously take it over him having a peanut allergy any day.

BruceAndNosh · 15/02/2023 10:34

I make a pasta sauce by chucking a handful of peanuts, a few sun dried tomatoes (the ones in oil) and a spoonful of philadelphia cream cheese in blender. Really yummy and not peanutty tasting.

Rainbowclimbinghigh · 15/02/2023 10:38

When the DC were younger, I used to make simple cookies by mixing smooth peanut butter, oats and mashed banana together and then baking it in the oven (for ease just used to put it in a baking tin, then cut it up).

You could maybe add Nutella to the mixture to make it more appetising!

WashAsDelicates · 15/02/2023 12:50

Smooth peanut butter disappears nicely into any soup or sauce. It thickens the liquid slightly, and you can add quite a lot before you notice any peanut flavour. It is particularly good in liquidised vegetable soup and in any dish with beans (dried sort, rather than green).
