Glasses and trampolines?

Woopdee · 15/02/2023 07:48

My 4 year old is new to both glasses and trampolines, should she take them off to bounce?

I tried googling but all I get is trampoline parks all with different policies, I mean just back garden one person trampoline.

Tia.

My daughter always removed them.

Nimbostratus100 · 15/02/2023 07:51

yes of course

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/02/2023 07:52

I would, yes. It'd be so easy for them to get damaged.

Unless she can't actually see, take them off

Woopdee · 15/02/2023 07:54

Great thank you!

What's her vision like without her glasses?

I grew up wearing glasses from a young age and did trampoline competitions etc. with them on. You can get straps to secure them on your head too.

There's no way I could have trampolined without them as my vision was too poor.

Zola1 · 15/02/2023 08:07

Just back garden play take them off...our 8 year old didn't once when someone else was looking after him, he did a forward flip landed on his face and broke them which cut all above his eye ☹.
Anything competitive you can get straps and stuff

Snowdropsarelovely · 15/02/2023 08:12

It really depends on your child's eye sight, mine always wore them in soft play, and on the trampoline, because she would've been unsafe without them'

Rainbowclimbinghigh · 15/02/2023 08:26

My DD has worn glasses since she was two, did trampoline classes for a couple of years and has also obviously been to trampoline parks.. Never took them off once and has always been fine. She's quite short-sighted so would be dangerous for her not to be able to see properly.

Rainbowclimbinghigh · 15/02/2023 08:27

And if they did break, I'd say that was part and parcel of being a child with glasses. She has a spare pair for that reason!

londonloves · 15/02/2023 08:28

Depends how short sighted they are. I was constantly being told as a child to take my glasses off to do active things but I couldn't see so it wasn't safe. You can get straps/sports bands.

mrsjoyfulprizeforraffiawork · 15/02/2023 09:09

As one who has very recently fallen forwards, still wearing my glasses throughout (unbroken) and had parts of the frame push into my eyebrow, causing a deep cut, I would say, leave them off (even though it is a more yielding surface on a trampoline).

Xrays · 15/02/2023 09:18

If she’s more than a -2ish without glasses I wouldn’t take them off as she won’t be able to see which actually increases the risk of having an accident and is horrible in itself being unable to see. I was short sighted from a very early age - wore glasses from 4 and I’m now a -9.50 at 42- and everyone always removed my glasses for PE etc and it meant I was completely miserable as I couldn’t see anything. Just horrid.

CatOnTheChair · 15/02/2023 09:21

Glasses stay on in this house.
He cant see very much without them, so it's safer to have sight, and possibly get a knock than to permanently not be able to see properly.

And yes, we have had one pair of broken glasses, and one black eye - but that's 2 events in years and years of use and sport.

reluctantbrit · 15/02/2023 09:21

DD took hers always off but her prescription wasn't huge, -1.5 I think. Our neighbour's DD has really bad vision and got prescription sport glasses and she wore them on their garden trampoline as well.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 15/02/2023 09:23

I wonder if all the people saying "take them off" would be happy to do a dangerous sport with limited vision themselves?

Yes quite. A friend's 13 year old was told to remove glasses to play rugby at school PE. He's practically blind without them. It seems like a great plan to run around a field where someone can throw a hard ball at your head when you can't see.....she complained to school about this.

As far as OP is concerned my son's trampolining coach does triple flips with his glasses on (just normal ones no straps) but presumably he's less likely to fall on his face than a child. My son has damaged his glasses trampolining so now I tell him to take them off. (his prescription is quite low)

BigBunkers · 15/02/2023 09:28

I did trampolining as a child and wore my glasses but I was very short sighted.
What is their prescription and how well can they see without them?

Woopdee · 15/02/2023 10:07

Hm she's a little short sighted but only in 1 eye, it's either -2 or -2.5

Oh come now.nit everyone with glasses is groping around feeling their way along.

The majority are slightly impaired and will be fine trampolining etc without them.

seperatedmum · 15/02/2023 10:47

funny, last night I just had a memory of another mum telling me to take off my glasses as a child for play equipment and me saying "well I can't see without them" and her taking it as rude and telling my mum 🙄 I think I manifested this thread into life lol 🤣

From a certain age most of DD's gymnastic group wore contacts if they aren't comfortable without glasses. Our optician said he fits them from 6-7 if required. The same with a friend's DS rugby as soon as he moved to a certain level.

BoringLittleMe · 15/02/2023 10:54

I trampolined as a teen. I used to wear my glasses but once did a front drop that ended badly and bent my glasses. (To the poster who says a trampoline surface is more yielding, it's really not that yielding when your weight is pulling it tight!)

After that, I didn't wear glasses to bounce but my vision is -3 in one eye and -3.25 in the other so I can see the edges of the trampoline and the cross in the middle more than well enough that I never fell off!

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 15/02/2023 11:04

This is such a dismissive comment Hmm

You don't have to be "feeling your way along" to struggle and trampolining is a sport that requires balance and good vision to be safe.

If you can't see properly you could so easily miss your landing and break something.

coffeecupsandwaxmelts · 15/02/2023 11:06

@reluctantbrit contacts are great but not all children can wear them as they're not suitable for all prescriptions etc. either.
