Can anyone recommend a good feel
Good comedy.

I generally like Adam sandler films but I've seen all of those.

Feeling a bit down, been a bit of a shitty day and I need a good laugh. Maybe a little cry when it all works out in the film.

Nothing too sad like ps I love you.

Thanks Smile

Ted lasso is brilliant

I always put on a modern family or Brooklyn 99. I love what some people might call ‘stupid’ films- hangover, bridesmaids, office space, game night, date night. Hope you feel better soon op x

What we did on our holiday (excellent underrated UK film, will give you minor bout of good crying)

The intouchables - do not let the fact it’s French put you off. It is hilarious

monsoon wedding

once - impossibly sweet Irish movie

Ferris Beuller’s Day Off

Parenthood

Meet the Fockers

When Harry Met Sally

local hero

sense and sensibility with Emma Thompson

the BBC 90s Pride and Prejudice series with Colin Firth

the fisher king

stardust - better than the princess bride, although that too

Dead poets society

2 days in Paris, or less quirkily, Before Sunrise, Before sunset

Barefoot in the park if you can find it

Breakfast at Tiffany’s

His girl Friday

Bringing up baby

romancing the stone

Brooklyn 99 has always been my comfort watch. There is always a laugh there somewhere.

Extraordinary on Disney
Ted Lasso on Apple

Detectorists is a nice gentle comedy series, lots of beautiful scenes of the English countryside and sweet, quirky characters.
it’s on bbc2 now I think

Yes, good choice. Very soothing and gentle. I’d also recommend ‘This Country’ for the same reasons. The characters are quite sweet, and it’s funny without being nasty.

I like Simon Pegg’s stuff. How about Spaced? The sitcom he made in the ‘90s. Again, not too harsh or nasty.

Or how about the old classics - Steptoe and Son, Dad’s Army, Porridge, Fawlty Towers, etc? In general, they’re not as funny as modern shows. None of them stand comparison with The Simpsons, South Park, Friends, Alan Partridge, Peep Show, etc. But they are gentler, less abrasive, more charming.

I recently watched Dear John. It was a comedy from the 1980s about divorcees - much funnier than I’d expected.

Modern Family is ace, my go to comfort comedy as there are so many episodes it's hard to run out

I have run out. 😢 I watched it pretty obsessively over the various lockdowns as it was about the only thing that I could cope with.

Am now at the point that had I been on the set when it was being made and one of the actors fell ill then I could give taking over their role a pretty good go. I don’t just know the words but the expressions, actions etc.

Amdone123 · 13/02/2023 20:36

@JoonT , Dear John is one of my favourite comedies ever.
Were there any sexual problems? (My siblings and I say this to each other on a regular basis)
Brilliant.

SeasonsHeatings · 13/02/2023 20:39

Bridesmaids. I can't watch this (or even think about it for too long) without laughing.

Also, the Pitch Perfect movies are a good watch

If you're willing to watch a series instead, try Superstore on Netflix. Episodes are only 20-30 minutes each and it's one of those shit comedies that makes you laugh at silliness.

I'd 2nd this. Really enjoying the lightheartedness. Hope you start feeling better soon @soboredtonight

Scrubs is my go to for a smile. Can really make me laugh, but also shed a tear.

Livedandlearned · 18/02/2023 20:31

@Mumoftwoinprimary that's such a shame!

Have you found anything similar to replace Modern Family?

DollyTots · 18/02/2023 20:39

Series - Trollied, Motherland

Films - It’s complicated, Table 19

DinosApple · 18/02/2023 21:36

Ghosts, Detectorists and a real surprise hit with my 12 and 13yo was One Foot in the Grave.

They laugh uproariously at the similarities between Victor Meldrew and DH... It has stood the test of time and is still hilarious.

We also escape to Saint Marie with Death in Paradise.

Riverlee · 18/02/2023 21:40

Shakespeare and Hathaway - nice gentle, cosy murder series on iplayer, It’s my go-to series when feeling down

lemonsaretheonlyfruit · 18/02/2023 21:43

I came on to say Ted lasso too. Funny and heartwarming.

IWantToBeACat · 18/02/2023 21:47

Schitts Creek, totally and utterly, flat out fantastic! I have to admit I didn't like the first two episodes, but after that, I was hooked, even if the episode starts off looking like it's going to be sad, it ends up on a positive. Love it.

Scrubs, hilarious! Sometimes sad, but for a reason, somehow ends up heart warming.

Modern Family, feel good and lovely.
