Renewing a drivers licence at the Post Office - do they let you keep your old licence?

Need to get mine renewed and it says online that they send your old one back to the DVLA for you - is this mandatory?

Seems odd, you'll be driving without a physical card on you? Or do they give you a letter that explains it's under renewal?

I had to renew mine at the post office recently, they took my existing one and I was given a receipt that had a tracking number on it that I could show the police if I needed to. The licence was sent on a Monday and was back by Friday.

ive kept all my old licenses never had a fine or any communication saying I need to send them back
my licence from the last house still gets used at the recycling dump as proof of address as they let you in without booking a time slot 😂😂
