Any walkers/hikers about?

I’m travelling to the UK in June and have the opportunity to spend up to a week on my own and I’d love to go somewhere where I can take long walks/hikes. Thinking south west of England. Possibly Wales. I imagine staying somewhere quiet and comfortable, where I can set out each day and just see where I end up. Don’t have a particular preference for coastal or inland, just somewhere peaceful. Where would you go?

Ado you know of any companies in Wales
that arrange guided coast trail holidays to cover the whole trail? I know there are many that offer self guided but I can't see me going on my own for safety reason.

Which section did u do?

I only walked a bit near Mwnt and came dangerously close to one of the sea quarries.

Dorset coast path - the range walks are fantastic with stunning views although as it’s a live firing army range you need to check when the footpaths are open online. They have flags up to alert people as to whether the range is open or closed. Usually open weekends though.

Dorset is easy to get around by bus for coast walks and not too busy and busy enough as a solo walker. We based ourselves in lulworth, it's gorgeous.

Really wouldn't recommend the Cotswolds for interesting walks.

Northumberland good call, easy to go along the coast

Would also recommend staying in robin hood bay, can walk to Whitby or to Scarborough easily in a day and get back by bus, then you could move inland for country walks. Did this as a solo walker and felt v safe.

Lots to consider thanks everyone.

@gillyweed the Welsh path sounds like a longer project but I’d absolutely love to do it! Maybe in 2024…

I agree @BlueHeelers but horses for courses, I guess!

Yes, I s'pose so. I walk in the south west but it's very tame compared with Cumbria or the Scottish Highlands. And the Cotswolds is pretty, but ... a bit boring.

Personally, I would do North Wales (around Llanberis and you could go out to Anglesey for beach/coast). It's my favourite place for walking. The Peak District or Dartmoor also lovely and the South Devon coast with very nice beaches is close. I'm personally not a massive fan of coast path walking as it's a lot of up and down steep hills and the scenery doesn't change a whole lot.

gillyweed · 14/02/2023 18:25

The Welsh coastal path is split into about 10-20 mile sections, so you can do whichever bit you want!

The official guidebooks have companies in the index who guide or carry bags, but I'm doing it on my own! It's glorious!!!!

Thank you @gillyweed, I am not brave enough to set off on my own mainly for safety reasons, love the idea though.

But I am not giving up hope so will keep asking when in company of walkers/hikers, I occasionally go on UK trail walking holidays so keeping my fingers crossed.

Northumberland is beautiful and has amazing walks and castles and coastline, you can train up there.

Or she could do the Coast to Coast, starting in Carlisle and walking to Tynemouth, along Hadrians Wall. I know a few people who've cycled it and fewer who've hiked. And at the end of it, she'll be in the perfect spot to go up to Seahouses for a boat tour to see the Puffins at the Farne Islands.

Puffins are the best!
