Can you name a tv programme/movie about middle class folk in the north of England?

There are plenty of middle-class folk in the north, but tv dramas and movies always seem to focus on working class stereotypes. Can you think of any that don't? I mean focus the storyline around mainly middle class characters, not just have one token middle class person. (Happy to be wrong if you guys can come up with a list).

The Bierderbeke Tapes/Affair/Connection - Leeds, and a great last scene in Hull

Several middle class characters in Happy Valley.

North and South. South Riding. Both period dramas, but set in the North and covering a range of characters.

The Likely Lads. Rodney Bewes and his wife had gone up in the world.

The Onedin Line.

LoveMAFS · 13/02/2023 06:58

I always thought Last of the summer wine was middle class, why are you asking?

middleager · 13/02/2023 07:12

Safe by Harlen Coben. Filmed in Manchester, a gated community.

Phineyj · 13/02/2023 07:16

The Nest. The characters were so posh it took me a while to realise it was Glasgow.

Lozzybear · 13/02/2023 07:18

@burnoutbabe confused as to why Leeds wouldn’t be classed as North by everyone?! It’s further north than Manchester or Sheffield!

@pottshrigley yes you're right. I knew it was northern though maybe leeds isn't north to everyone?

Great show and great cast of British actors.

That would be a pity @pottshrigley if Leeds isn't considered "North" to everyone 🙄🤣 as it is further North than both Manchester and Liverpool - and what's more, I don't know one single Yorkshire person who isn't proud to be from the North, and particularly from Yorkshire!

Agreed - Bread is as far removed from middle class as I would've thought imaginable !!

Elvira2000 · 13/02/2023 07:48

I immediately thought cold feet. But only Jennie and Pete were actually northern. They were the more working class of the group. Then on the other side karen and David were rich with Southern accents. 4/6 of the main actors weren't from the north - let alone Manchester.

pottshrigley · 13/02/2023 07:51

@TheLadyofShalott1 I think you've got a bit confused, it was @burnoutbabe that said that, not me!

BeginningToLookALotLike · 13/02/2023 07:53

I know, just ignore my suggestion of Bread etc, I hadn't had enough coffee!

Hobbesmanc · 13/02/2023 08:01

Even Happy Valley has plenty of middle class characters. Catherine's ex and her son, the pharmacist and the teacher etc. But the best northern shows do tap into that rich seam of working class culture.
