Weatherspoons reduced prices

Weatherspoons has raised the prices of their drink and food. Not surprising as costs have increased. For example unlimited tea or coffee had increased in price from 99p to £1.25.
But they have now reduced their prices cancelling out most price increases and offering special deals. How can they afford to do this? The pubs are always warm so they still have heating on.

Squeezing their suppliers is my guess.

Reugny · 12/02/2023 15:56

Smaller portions? Cheaper ingredients?

Getir · 12/02/2023 15:57

Are you complaining that they have reduced their prices?

Some of the portions are a tiny bit smaller, but not much.
I am sure they squeeze suppliers, but surely all chains do?

@Getir No! I just don't understand how they can afford to. I go there and am happy to pay less.

www.manchestereveningnews.co.uk/whats-on/whats-on-news/wetherspoons-close-pubs-across-uk-26076669 They are closing a number of pubs and making millions £££ losses.

OldTinHat · 12/02/2023 16:01

They've recently sold a load of their pubs.

Pixiedust1234 · 12/02/2023 16:04

Squeezing suppliers. Squeezing staff and their wages (making one person do two peoples jobs), putting everyone on zero hour contracts. Threatening landlords to cut corners or be fired. The usual tactics that most multi millionaires seem to employ.

LightSpeeds · 12/02/2023 16:05

Prices have gone UP (a lot) in my local Wetherspoons!

LadySeafish · 12/02/2023 16:06

I've been to a few wetherspoons recently and noticed the app has reduced the number of staff considerably from when we visited in the years pre.COVID when ordering was done at the bar.

The place was also busy compared to other places in town. That bit cheaper had encouraged more people to.eat there.it seems.

I thought the food was pretty good and drinks were branded. There is a big menu so probably not all dishes are great but I had a panini and my dad a fish and chips, and they were.both fine and probably a third cheaper than anywhere else of similar quality.

rwalker · 12/02/2023 16:08

I think there going on the principle of sell a lot for a little
out of all the pubs WS always seem busy if not rammed

ExistenceOptional · 12/02/2023 16:12

@LadySeafish I find the food a decent quality. I am careful what I order though. The fish and chips is good and the beer is always good. And yes it is much cheaper than anywhere else.

We had Lunch in WS yesterday, mixed grill for DH, half chicken for me, two hot drinks (refilled once each), just over £20.00, bargain.

DrinkingAllTheGin · 12/02/2023 16:15

They will and in fact are putting most products out to tender to find cheaper ingredients meaning manufacturers are fighting for their contract. Yes most chains will so this but they all have different cost vs quality targets

LadySeafish · 12/02/2023 16:19

On our last visit we saw an odd thing. A woman on the table next to us had two bottles of wine delivered to her table and they were in ice buckets.

I assumed she had mates joining her but as soon as the server left she took them.out, wiped them dry, and put in her shopping bag.

It got me wondering - is Wetherspoons cheaper than a corner shop? (We weren't close to any big supermarket but there are a couple of spar shops in the area).

It's another source of income if they are!
