Devastated about job! Would you apply?

Recently moved from England to Ireland with DP and DC for various reasons but mostly to be near DP’s family.

Just having a casual glance through job listings online and have seen my DREAM job. The job I wanted for years while we were in England but never came up 😭😭

I’m devastated. I know it’s just a job and I may not even have got it but I’m truly gutted. I used to check this company’s website all the time to see if this sort of job had come up. I have all the essential criteria and all the desirable criteria too. And it’s quite a niche field which I am experienced in. But the job description clearly states hybrid working and that you may be needed for evening / weekend events on occasion which I couldn’t do. Apart from those events, the rest of the job is entirely doable on computer from home.

We’ve only been over here since last year and kids are settled in their school so can’t really move back over to England right now.

Just wanted to vent!! Why couldn’t it have come up last year? 😭

Please cheer me up! (I have wine but it’s not working right now…) Is it even worth applying if it says hybrid and occasional evening / weekend work?

No harm in applying.
There's probably a couple of considerations for the employer - do they need to employed someone UK-based for any reason, and how much of a hybrid scenario would they offer?

For you - does being UK-employed work for you / tax reasons? And what sort of hybrid scenario could you make work - would it be feasible for you to travel over / at your own cost for a couple of days once a month etc

If you tick as many boxes for them as you suggest, then maybe you can both make it work. If not, nothing lost on your part.

If you don’t ask you don’t get - go for it and see what they happens!

Christmascracker0 · 11/02/2023 21:21

Woops I’ve managed to merge two sentences there - go for it and see what they say & go for it and see what happens!

I'd apply if it's your dream job and hybrid. Irelands like a one hour flight from England so you could commute occasionally if you needed to.

Locsup183 · 11/02/2023 21:23

@Highlandhome I hadn’t considered tax. Thanks for flagging that. We are in Northern Ireland so might be okay there. The job ad says they will consider partial remote working scenarios. I could feasibly get over once a month I think for a few days.

I would apply!

If a company really wants someone they'll take them, some will also offer to pay for travel for such events.

Locsup183 · 11/02/2023 21:24

@Christmascracker0 😂 I understood and hadn’t even noticed!

@GoodChat Yep, about an hour. Thanks!

@NCcantthinkofanewone I think I will - nothing to lose! (Apart from several hours of filling in the application form questions 😂)

You have to apply!
Take it one step at a time and there may be solutions to all the obstacles.

NotMyDayJob · 11/02/2023 21:37

If you're in Northern Ireland that's not a different country (and therefore tax implications), and if they'll consider remote what have you got to lose?

roses2 · 11/02/2023 22:02

I work for a London based company and we have colleagues in Scotland who fly in for meetings 1-2 times per month (at their cost). I would go for it!

Cocobutt · 11/02/2023 22:04

But the job description clearly states hybrid working and that you may be needed for evening / weekend events on occasion which I couldn’t do.

Depending on how often these are then it still may be possible to apply.

You’ll still be travelling a lot less than if you were doing a daily commute.

butterfliedtwo · 11/02/2023 22:07

Since you're in N. Ireland I'd definitely apply and talk to them about remote working if you're successful.

GhostOrchid · 11/02/2023 22:10

I’ve got a couple of colleagues who are Northern Ireland based. No issues at all. They fly over for a few days every month or so.
