And do they truly help/work?

are the cheaper brands as good as the more expensive? There’s a lot to choose from

I was watching a programme on TV the other day that said we shouldn't need them with a healthy diet.. but I can only speak for myself & I feel better with them.
I have a multivit every day, & add a vit D in winter too (might not be wise, but you did ask!) an omega fish oil capsule, & sometimes a Vit C. I just get the supermarket ones usually, the Vit D one is a bit more upmarket..
I eat quite a bit of fruit & nuts but can't have many veggies due to IBS, & rarely eat meat.

B12 on prescription, magnesium and vitamin d. Far more energy, sleeping better and no longer have loads of hairs falling out.

Just to add, personally, I feel that there's not as much goodness in foods as there was in the past.. that was my main reason for starting to take vits.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 11/02/2023 15:50

High strength Vitamin D which is recommended in UK during Oct to Mar (Boots 3 for 2).
Feroglobin for iron and folic acid (also has vitamin B12) following GP recommendation after blood test (also Boots 3 for 2).

Hopefully most of what you need comes from diet. What problem are you trying to solve, or do you just feel like you 'should'?

megletthesecond · 11/02/2023 15:50

Boots multi vitamin and mineral tabs. I like the look of the women's menopause supplements but they're often too big to swallow.
Not sure if they makes me feel any different as I've taken vits since I was a kid.

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 11/02/2023 17:05

i thought similar about a friends menopause supplements, they look huge!

i'm looking to improve stamina i suppose! to get through life! days off see me knackered, have lost 3 stone another 1-2 to go. nails feel brittle and yes, i'm in menopause so thinking about that too

weirdly, i feel similar about food not feeling as nutritious. not sure why!

This is true, our soils are significantly more depleted than they used to be. Combine that with the increased number of chemicals used on (whole) and in (processed) foods that further decrease absorption of what vitamins and minerals are present.

Nonetheless synthetic vitamins are definitely not an equal counterpart. Take an orange for example: it contains a specific combination of micronutrients to mean that your body is able to properly utilise its components. Taking an ascorbic acid ("vitamin C") tablet might be better than nothing but it doesn't compare to consumption through a natural source.

Some vitamins and minerals are actually a really bad idea to just take without being cognizant of their overall involvement in the body. Zinc and iron being two of those as an example.

EatingWormsMichael · 11/02/2023 17:16

Spatone for iron cos I'm nearly anaemic and the normal iron tablets play havoc with my bowels.

I really should take either a multi vit or vit d but I'm useless at remembering to take stuff.

Which vitamins do you think have made a difference for you? http://www.mumsnet.com/Talk/amiibeingunreasonable/4736331-which-vitamins-do-you-think-have-made-a-difference-for-you

We use these too

I.was.diagnosed with a vit D deficiency a few years ago despite being outside a lot all year round so we Booth started taking the complete A to Z.

DD (age 19) also has a multi vitamin with omega 3 for brain development

And yes you should. Be able to get all you need from a healthy diet but even with lots lf.fruit and veg you. Can't guarantee the quality of the fruit and veg

WashAsDelicates · 11/02/2023 17:44

Pro-biotics because a recent course of meds messed up my digestion. Might help, can't do any harm.

Omega3 because I'm struggling with fatigue, brain fog and constantly catching colds. All blood tests normal. Again, might help, can't do any harm.

D3 because advised to take high doses by my dermatologist, long before Covid. I only take them equinox to equinox, as I generally get some time outdoors in the middle of the day every day.

Multi vitamins for same reason as Omega3.

Brands: Solgar, Kirkland and Centrum all recommended by a family member with relevant knowledge. Bio-Kult because it was the brand with the highest number and greatest range of micro-organisms that did not have to be kept in the fridge.

Whether I notice any difference? I don't know yet. Have only just started taking the Omega and the vits. In the past, when I was suffering from hair loss, fragile skin and brittle nails, the supplements really helped. I noticed an improvement in the hair loss within 2-3 weeks, skin took a bit longer, and nails had to grow out completely before I could see an improvement.

I only take high strength vitamin d, however I do have a pretty healthy diet. My dh doesn't eat vegetables and finds he has more energy if he takes a multivitamin. We just use own brand supermarket ones. If you look at the ingredients you can usually get the same strength as expensive brands.

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 11/02/2023 17:54

I’m constantly catching bugs, always been good at staving off illness but since I started my new job in a very unhygienic environment I am ill frequently!

my diet is good I think. Always end up with rubbish fruit/veg when I grow my own. Must be the soul then! 😆

I take Turmeric every day and can't recommend it enough I'm in my sixties and a couple of years ago was feeling very creaky. My knees were painful and I was getting arthritic pains in my joints. I read about Turmeric supplements and decided to give them a go, it's honestly been life changing. I have no aches or pains at all now.
I also take daily retinol and collagen supplements. I'm not sure whether they've helped but I do get compliments on my skin so maybe they work.

uncomfortablydumb53 · 11/02/2023 18:11

I take an A-Z supermarket Multivitamin cheap but pretty much the same content as Centrium etc

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 11/02/2023 18:13

I’ll also look into turmeric as I now seem to be up and down sets of steps a lot.

my nails are shocking though. Def need to sort those. I’ll have a read of the thread linked

Hi Jimbob , maybe I ask which turmeric and collagen you take please

pensionconfusion · 12/02/2023 09:51

If you do add vitamin D do not take it in pill form. The spray is more easily absorbed by the body. I was told this years ago by a nutritionist.

BetterYou Vitamin D Daily Oral Spray, Natural Peppermint, 15ml amzn.eu/d/e3JY6Of

TotteringByGenteely · 12/02/2023 09:59

I take Boots Menopause multi-vitamins, Zinc, Complex B vitamins and Vitamin D spray.
However, having recently listened to a radio series where scientists talked about how damaging synthetic vitamins can be, once I've used them up I will only carry on with the vitamin D in the winter months.

YerAWizardHarry · 12/02/2023 10:02

I’ve consistently taken VitD through this winter and haven’t had the crippling sadness the dark and cold usually brings. I like in the North of Scotland so will probably continue taking them year round

Blort · 12/02/2023 12:56

Trying to find a decent tablet that's easy to swallow and doesnt taste vile.

I have ADHD and my psychiatrist has also recommended high does omega 3+6.

JustAGirlInACountrySong · 12/02/2023 13:00

Think o will look into the menopause specific ones

Didn't know but d came in spray form! Good to know
