PCOS - not having any periods?

I was told back in 2018 I ‘probably’ have PCOS . Had always had very heavy and painful periods, but fairly irregular .

Was told at that point there’s no treatment for PCOS and it’s just a case of losing weight.

About 18 months ago my periods stopped altogether . My GP has said to go and get a blood test, which there was a bit of a waiting list for … due to get it done next week. Gave me a tablet which did give me a week’s very light bleeding over Christmas but nothing else .

I’ve previously had - for period issues -

a mirena coil
implant
microgynon 30
cerazette
northisterone
decapeptyl/triptoerlin

My BMI’s about 45-47 and I’ve got horrendous issues with hair under my chin, and on my back/between my shoulders .

I’ve been referred back to gynaecology for a review and GP said might need a scan. GP did also say it might be an idea to get a Mirena again for endometrial protection.

I’m 31 and haven’t had any children so a bit worried I’m going to be told I’ve gone through the menopause or something like that, not very sure.

Is it normal to have no periods at all, is it dangerous?

You are (likely) not having periods because you are not ovulating.
it’s not dangerous but does indicate that your hormones etc are not operating as they should.
losing weight is not the only way to help PCOS - it is one of the ways. Have you had the fasting blood sugar test? Insulin resistance is very common with PCOS - it’s one of the reasons it can be so hard to lose weight.
There are some good charities out there that have advice and help.
I have PCOS so i understand.
The best thing you can do is inform yourself about the condition - it’s risks to your health.
Losing weight can help with periods returning but not always. Every woman is different.
Ask the gynecologist what they usually recommend but also do some research before you go. Usually contraception isn’t treating PCOS per say as it is stopping you ovulating. It’s not dealing with the underlying health condition.

Hi I have PCOS and mine also stopped around age 30. I had to have norithisterone to kick them off again and then clomid to help me conceive.

I have PCOS. I’m not sure it’s dangerous not to have periods but it’s not normal and needs treating.

Other than having a blood test and instigating on a referral to endro (will take ages) can you also ask for a referral to a weight loss programme and do some research as to how you’d like to approach it? it will help a lot.

I found laser treatment good for excess hair, but it will tend to come back if your hormones don’t improve.

I have pcos, I often went years without periods but a couple of years ago my doctor told me it wasnt great, as it increases chances of cervical cancer. I've found I've got them more regular (every couple of months) with losing weight, less carbs, berberine and myo inosotol.
