I think our holiday might get cancelled tomorrow

Supposed to be going away tomorrow for a few days somewhere snowy. Looking at the weather forecast at our destination (Scandinavia) I think our flight might get cancelled. It’s like 60mph wind gusts at the airport.
I need this break so badly. Menopausal anxiety and work stress has been unbearable recently and the idea of this break was keeping me going.
What do I do if we get to the airport and the flight is cancelled? There’s no more flights with our carrier until Wednesday.
What’s my plan B to prevent me have a complete sobbing meltdown at the airport?
Could we just fly somewhere else? Can you even do that these days with all the advance passenger information and online check in?
Do I pack clothes for warm weather just in case?
We’re driving up to the airport tonight as our flight is really early, so won’t know if it’s cancelled until we get there.
Fuck.

Not the same, but can you find a hotel in the UK somewhere with free cancellation as a back up so at least you can still have a lovely break away. We're off to Cheltenham today and our very nice hotel is cancellable until 2pm today.

Are flights currently being cancelled at the destination? I think you're worrying unnecessarily. Chances are it will go ahead as normal - if flights were cancelled at every slight weather event it would be chaos. Especially to parts of the world that have intense weather in the winter you might find that is very normal. It might get delayed if there is an issue, but again this often isn't for long.
Worst case scenario it gets cancelled. Do you have travel insurance? You'd be able to find something online for a decent price I'm sure, though it may not be abroad. AFAIK you would struggle to 'swap' your flight, but you might get a voucher from your carrier.

The airline either finds an alternative route, to another airport and bus/train, or rearranges trip and compensates. If they offered a refund could you plan an alternative break?

Check the online arrivals board at your destination now and see if flights are landing, Then you’ll know and can rebook, if necessary. I suspect they’re still flying there.

IHopeYouStepOnALegPiece · 11/02/2023 09:51

Whereabouts in Scandinavia are you heading?

Check the flights today and see if they’re landing. I live in Denmark and I’ve had some interestingly windy landings and a slight delay but nothing cancelled

Poppyliveshere · 11/02/2023 09:58

We landed in Tromso a few years ago, in a huge snowstorm. Yes we were delayed but these countries are used to it and manage far better than the UK

Chewbecca · 11/02/2023 10:19

It's really unusual for flights to be cancelled due to weather, it has to be really extreme / outside the norms for that country.

So chances are, you will go. If you can't, book into a luxury hotel in the UK, we can help find somewhere fabulous!

Schnooze · 11/02/2023 10:25

Fingers crossed you can get a last minute flight somewhere else if necessary. I can’t see why you can’t. Hopefully someone with experience will come along soon.

Lockheart · 11/02/2023 11:05

Why don't you try and call the airline today and see if you can speak to someone there who can give you a better idea? Planes do land in some fairly extreme weather, I am not sure 60mph gusts would stymie them.

I mean this in the kindest way OP, but do you have any actual reason to believe your flight will be cancelled, or have you built this up in your head?

It sounds like you're using this holiday as a crutch but really you need to address the root cause of your anxiety and stress, because as nice as it will undoubtedly be, this holiday will not cure those for you.

karamazing · 11/02/2023 11:09

I have been in this situation before and literally booked another flight on the spot, standing inside the airport. At the moment, there is a lot of availability. Outside of school/bank holidays and the summer rush, planes usually have seats and there is masses of hotel availability. If you have time, you could set up a Plan B on your phone and be ready to launch it right away if Plan A does not happen. Just choose somewhere without strict API requirements and unusual covid conditions.

MaverickGooseGoose · 11/02/2023 11:17

I doubt they will be cancelled for 60mph gusts they will reroute if necessary. Are you normally anxious?

I landed in a hurricane in rekyavik, it wasn't fun and they had to 'hide' the planes behind a hangar for a couple of hours before it was safe to get the air bridges out but they still landed flights.

notmaryberry · 11/02/2023 12:39

Thank you all. I think I was having a bit of a moment. I’ve calmed down a bit and we’ll just have to see what happens.
I took a PPs advice and looked at the flights today and they’re still going in and out despite 45mph winds so fingers crossed we’ll be okay.

You can check Flight Radar to see if planes are still landing there. Hope it's not too bumpy for you!
