married person tax allowance

We are in Scotland, recently married. Husband has just mentioned this and I have zero clue.

Please can someone help? Both work full time, both pay tax.

If you both work full time you wouldn’t get anything. It’s to allow a non or part time working spouse to transfer some of their personal allowance over to the FT spouse.

As pp said. Only for married couples where one is earning less than the tax threshold.

My husband and I did this after I had to give up work to care for our youngest ( disabled ) but if I was still working and paying my own tax then it wouldn't be worth applying for.

Infact I know spouses that have done so in your situation and the person giving up their own tax allowence ended up with a big bill.

In your situation, as you're both employed and pay tax, it's not worth it...unless he want's to give you some of his allowance. Wink don't do that, just joking

he is currently undergoing treatment for cancer so is off sick (long term) so might be something to revisit (no idea) once he goes on to SSP...

I thought it sounded too good to be true! A tax break for bog standard workies heaven forbid!

Just seeing your update Jax. that sounds tough Flowers
Yes. Definitely revisit once he’s on SSP, you’ll definitely be entitled then as he’ll be earning under the personal allowance threshold.
Hope the treatment goes well Flowers

thank you @DowntonCrabby - we have a good prognosis (everything crossed) so far, it will be life altering, chemo and then surgery and then probably bit more chemo.

So something to think about possibly in future.
