Yorkshire Coast

Newtrix · 09/02/2023 19:23

My Husband and I are having a week away to the Yorkshire Coast staying in a lodge next to Cayton Bay.

Only things we have planned so far are a Meerkat experience at Bridlington Animal Park and a meal at The Farrier and having a day at Whitby.

Can anyone recommend any days out/walks/activities restaurants that either can't be missed or are hidden gems.

Many thanks

The walk from Ravenscar to Robin Hood's Bay is beautiful.

Some of the villages on the moors are beautiful - Helmsley, Pickering, Hutton le Hole.

Sutton Bank for the amazing views on a clear day.

Flamborough Heads for the birds.

Doyouthinktheyknow · 09/02/2023 19:31

It’s a lovely stretch of coastline for walking.

Robin Hoods bay and Staithes are particularly gorgeous. We always walk from Whitby to Robin Hood’s bay and Staithes (different days😉) and get the bus back.

Scarborough is lovely, the castle is worth a visit.

We are staying in Whitby for a week this summer, love the place so much.

Newlifestartingatlast · 09/02/2023 19:33

robin hoods bay , boggle hole
Bemptom cliffs rspb
spurn point
Scarborough is ok at quiet times of year
staithes
york- if you’ve not been to yorkshire before and don’t know it- make the effort with a longer journey
Drive tour around north york moors - in a few weeks all the wild daffodils will be out - famous for it . There’s also a nice run on the steam trains at North Yorkshire steam railway through the moors and it will be lovely in spring

Anapana · 09/02/2023 19:35

Hunmanby gap cafe for a bacon butty and a coffee, looking at the beautiful sea view

Haus of S&M if you can get a reservation- it’s sort of a weird/secret Asian restaurant you book through Facebook

if it’s not wet get the bus to Filey and walk all the way back along the cliffs to cayton bay on the Cleveland Way - you’ll prob see porpoises

ravenscar to see the seal colony - you’ll smell them before you see them ha ha

have a great time, it’s lovely

Ukholidaysaregreat · 09/02/2023 19:36

From Cayton Bay you can walk along the cliffs to Scarborough (North) and Filey (South) and catch the bus back. No need to drive any where and both places worth visiting!

Coxspurplepippin · 09/02/2023 19:36

'Drive tour around north york moors - in a few weeks all the wild daffodils will be out - famous for it'

Absolutely this - the Lenten lillies in Farndale.

And the abbeys - Rievaulx, Jervaulx, Fountains.

Steam trains don’t run until end March but yes the moors are beautiful. That walk round the hole of horcum is stunning

Orangesare · 09/02/2023 19:38

Pickering Helmsley and Kirkbymoorside are market towns sorry pp it’s a pet gate of mine they always get called villages and they’re not! They are lovely though. Kirkbymoorside is a beautiful Georgian market town

Sewerby Hall and gardens, flamborough has a few different coves. Thornwick bay and north landing are really good. For large expanses of sand hunmanby gap and Bridlington. Filey brigg is a great walk but watch the tide times.
Bridlington old town, priory and also the museum Scarborough has a good art gallery and a couple of free museums they are on the council website. There are lots of castles and abbeys around all English heritage. Scarborough is still a nice town but the town centre is run down now. The south cliff is a nice area.
Bigger attractions such as Eden camp near Malton, a couple of lavender farms, Dalby forest.
But you could easily fill the week near the coast and there are free or very cheap things to do.

Maverickess · 09/02/2023 19:38

Goathland is where Heartbeat was filmed and was also Hogwarts train station, lovely little village on the moors, second Staithes too, further on Saltburn is a nice town with plenty of places to eat. Danby with the views from the Beacon and then the Moors Centre.
Scarborough castle has some amazing views, and the Sea Life Centre.
The hole of Horcum is a good place for a walk l, near Pickering which is worth a visit as is Malton.

Allschoolsareartschools · 09/02/2023 19:38

Cayton Bay is an ideal point to join the Cleveland Way coastal path & walk into Filey which is a lovely little town with a beautiful beach & some really nice places to get lunch or coffee. There's some lovely views & a decent bus service back to Cayton Bay. Ravenscar to Robin Hoods Bay is a fantastic walk but there's a very steep stretch to it!

Anapana · 09/02/2023 19:44

Don’t leave without a groovy moo ice cream 😍

CalloohCallayFrabjousDay · 09/02/2023 19:49

Mr Chips in Whitby is fab. Also Bothams for a Whitby bun.

Eden camp is great for half a day and there's another museum at Hutton-le-hole.

Nat6999 · 09/02/2023 19:55

If you want the best fish & chips go to Inghams fish & chip restaurant in Filey, the fish are over a foot long & the freshest I have ever tasted.

funnelfan · 09/02/2023 19:55

Castle Howard is lovely if you like stately homes.

timtam23 · 09/02/2023 19:57

We have stayed at Cayton Bay. We loved Filey, it has a quieter more old-fashioned feel to it. Scarborough has a lovely big park called Peasholm park, we were there in summer so the boating lake etc was open but it would still be nice for a walk around in the park. We had lunch in Scarborough at a lovely cafe called Mojo's Music Cafe, if you were looking for somewhere chilled and informal for a casual lunch or snack I'd recommend it

Lemonnhoney · 09/02/2023 20:08

Definitely flambrough head! And bempton cliffs too

Newtrix · 09/02/2023 20:10

These are all amazing ideas, thank you all so much.

@Coxspurplepippin Fountains Abbey is one of our favourite places, Rievaulx looks amazing so think that's a must.

Ahh I'm jealous. Cayton Bay is fabulous! Are you staying in CB caravan park?

RunningAwayToJoinTheCircus · 09/02/2023 20:23

The Ryedale Folk museum is in Hutton-le-hole. Then go to the Lion on Blakey Ridge for a meal. It's a beautiful place, been there hundreds of years, and the food is gorgeous. Ralph's Cross and an iron age barrow are right outside the pub too, if you like history.

Newtrix · 11/02/2023 21:10

@Orangesare You mentioned Helmsley do you know it well? We fancy driving to Rievaulx Abbey then doing the hour walk along the Cleveland way into Helmsley for a lunch and mooch. Just wondered if there was a bus route that stops at Rievaulx for the way back? Many thanks.

OP posts:
Orangesare · 12/02/2023 06:17

No buses but it’s not that far to walk so you could walk back again after lunch. There will be some circular wall from rievaulx.
You might want to visit byland abbey which is a few miles from rievaulx and now free entry.

NovacDino · 12/02/2023 06:27

Filey is an absolutely lovely little seaside town. I second the recommendation of Ingham's for fish and chips - it's the best fish and chips I've ever had. The beach is amazing too, really big and clean.

SeatonCarew · 12/02/2023 07:27

I second Peasholm Park in Scarborough, it's really nice to go for a walk round the lake. I believe they still light it up at night, but perhaps somebody else knows?

cakeorwine · 12/02/2023 07:47

The Yorkshire coast is lovely.

Lots of things have been mentioned. Hope you have a decent hat and coat though!

Some lovely coast walks, seaside towns and inland villages.

Meceme · 12/02/2023 09:48

If you're planning to go to Rievaulx are you English Heritage members? This gives free entry and there are a lot of other EH properties in the area, Helmsley Castle, Pickering Castle, Scarborough Castle and Whitby Abbey to name a few. If you like these sorts of places it's cheaper to take yearly membership as each EH member can take up to 6 under 18s for free. ( fountains Abbey also admits EH members for free)
