To buy another washing machine whilst waiting for a repair ?

Or am I crazy?

my washing machine has just gone wrong after less than a year. Quite a big repair that needs a part that’s out of stock and might not even come into stock. The manufacturer have said it could take up to 28 days to get this part. I’ve begged them to think about replacing it instead. Then if they do get a part it will be a wait for a fix or if they can’t they will replace. I have two kids who are both disabled and cannot be without one for a few days let alone 28 days. They won’t budge on their decision.

I have a lot of washing.

I live rurally and the nearest launderette is 20 mins away which is annoying with two kids now going on half term. I can’t manage them and carry laundry when there’s no car park, I’d have to park and walk with it all. Nightmare.

a couple petrol stations near me have the stand alone washing machines however they’ve been in use every time I’ve tried using them, also you cannot use your own detergent so worried about mine and ds skin.

family are 20-30 minutes away so not much help. I don’t want to burden anyone. Mil has been doing some of it but she’s going on holiday and doesn’t want us going in to use it ourselves when they are away!

I don’t have any close friends to ask.

the laundry is continuous every day.

would it be mad to buy a back up? I’ve been looking at second hand all day but not found much. Can get a cheap one for around £200. Haven’t really got the money (or the space) but my own sanity? I could either keep it as a back up or sell it as new if they fix my machine. There’s not even a guarantee they will fix it but hoping they will replace for free if they cannot.

would people think I am crazy?

28 days or more seems like a long time!

It IS a long time.. two disabled kids.. poor you.
I'd defo buy a cheap one (I always buy Indesit?) get it installed & then decide what's best to do.. can you sell the older one? (Assuming they don't replace with new) Then the new one will be under guarantee? You'd lose an awful lot of money selling the brand new one.

Thank you. Yes this could be an option too. However, my broken one is 10kg which we need most of the time. I was thinking about going smaller on a back up to save ££! I have been working hard to cut down the amount of laundry! My broken one was more expensive!

I think I may keep an eye out on second hand for a couple days. I have contacted a couple people who refurbish washing machines.

I would feel wasteful buying a new one but then so is driving around to launderettes, paying to park then using them 🤷‍♀️

I’m kind of expecting them to replace my current one. The technician said it’s a difficult fix and the part is hard to get hold of sometimes but the company won’t think about replacing until about 28 days after they’ve searched for the part. I think I will give them another ring tomorrow and see if they have an update on the part needed! It was less than a year old. I would have just bought s new one otherwise. We do use it s lot!

Could you look into renting one?

Enko · 09/02/2023 19:35

Could you hire one? Some companies does that.

Yanbu I had 4 children and one machine broke down a lot I struggled. And no SEN

If the alternative is driving a 40 minute round trip several times a week which will be a fortune on fuel, as well as the cost of using the laundrette the you will probably be just as well to buy a machine - and it'll be far less stressful too.

I did that last time ours broke. Far cheaper than getting service washes done (there were seven of us in the house at the time) and much more convenient than going to the launderette when we were working full time.

I have rang up a few and looked on Facebook but sadly not found anything suitable but I’ll have another look today! They seem to get snapped up quickly! 😒
