School work during half term

Do your kids do much/any work during half term (if so just a little or quite a bit) or do you just let them fully chill?

No, holidays are holidays so no work beyond the usual reading they’d do anyway.

popandchoc · 09/02/2023 17:31

If they have homework they do that when they want but thats it.

reluctantbrit · 09/02/2023 17:43

It depends on the year.

In Infant - nothing apart from asking us to continue reading.
KS2 - a bit more each year, the worst was Y5/6 where we got proper worksheets to do and they were marked.

Secondary:
KS3 - asked to practice vocabulary for their MFL. If they started a new book in English Lit they were asked to read the full book. They were encouraged to go somewhere connected to their History topic.

KS4 - full blown revision homework each and every holiday incl. Summer.

As DD was in holiday clubs most days in February half-term during primary school, we did it all on the weekend when she broke up. Luckily she was happy doing worksheets at that age.

They are in junior school. DH and I have different views!

I disagree on holiday work why just why means they never get a break.

HilidayHope · 11/02/2023 15:29

No, not when in junior school.
Dc y7 probably won't have much to do.
Dc doing GCSEs will have revision to be getting on with.

AllWorkYoPlait · 11/02/2023 15:33

Our year 10s have a bunch of mocks revision to do. If they choose not to do any then they'll bear the consequences, but they won't be chased around the house. They know it needs doing but they aren't academic.

watchfulwishes · 11/02/2023 15:37

No, mine never did unless it was revision once older. All did well at school, expected to work to high standards in term time with proper rest in the holidays.

Zola1 · 11/02/2023 15:41

My eldest is year 8, her school don't set homework the week before before term so she won't have any to do

dizzydizzydizzy · 11/02/2023 15:44

It often happens but IMHO it should not be allowed except in y11 and y13. Of course it's a different matter if the teachers set it well before half term and the kids choose to leave it til then.

bellsbuss · 11/02/2023 15:47

No apart from reading with primary aged child they don't do school work during the holidays. It's time for them to have fun and chill. My older children just do any homework that has been set.

JockTamsonsBairns · 11/02/2023 15:52

No, I'm not keen on holiday homework. We don't take holidays in term time, so I expect their holiday time to be respected.
That said, when the DCs were at Primary school, they they were often upset at the thought of getting into trouble for not having done it - so they would end up doing it anyway.

afinishedkiss · 11/02/2023 15:56

No work at all done on mid term. It’s holiday time and should be treated as such.

GoodVibesHere · 11/02/2023 15:57

Primary school definately not! My DDs are getting really good grades and never did schoolwork during the holidays whdn they were in primary.

Secondary school years 7, 8 and 9 possibly a bit of revision if they have tests coming up. By year 10 & 11 then yes, sadly it is needed for GCSE's especially yr 11 as they approach the May/June exams.

Cottagecheeseisnotcheese · 11/02/2023 16:17

only Easter holidays before exams aged 16 and 18 ( just maybe revision during Christmans holidays before mocks) otherwise holidays are holidays, I also think kids should not do homework seven days a week that either saturday or Sunday should be a complete break and for younger children both days
Homework should not be set for holidays and certainly not before ages 14 they need a break , education takes many forms learning to cook , social relationships budgetting, occupying oneself is a useful skill

Starlightstarbright1 · 11/02/2023 16:20

Juniors would be a break just reading but not school books.

I would do things like baking, exercise, socialising.. all important

Sucessinthenewyear · 11/02/2023 16:24

Yr2 - continue reading, daily piano and we might do an Orchard time table game. Other than that just the usual reading and making recipes, science museum, reading a magazine, running around a park - all educational but not formal education.

OldChinaJug · 11/02/2023 16:24

I'd keep up with reading and times tables practice.

It's amazing how quickly they forget without the practice but, other than that, I didn't make my children do holiday homework and, as a teacher, I don't set it either.

Many parents ask for it and I just tell them - reading, times tables and practice spellings from the word list appropriate to their year group.

Children need time to chill, do nothing, see their friends... there's more to life than school 🤷🏻‍♀️

LostMyMarblesToday · 11/02/2023 16:27

Primary- no I wouldn't expect them to do school work during holidays.

DS is y7, and will be revising for 2 assessments (tests will be week back) and has 2 other pieces of work to complete (each will only take about half an hour).

GetTheGoodLookingGuy · 11/02/2023 16:27

I work in a Junior school. We set homework as usual the week of half term, but not over Christmas or Easter. Homework is set on a Wednesday, due in the next Monday. So there's actually no expectation to do the homework over half-term - they could do it on Wednesday, Thursday or Friday night, or over one of the weekends, just like normal. We don't set any more over half term.

Cryingbutstilltrying · 11/02/2023 16:31

Our primary school doesn’t set homework at all, aside from reading each night. It’s glorious!
Ds will carry on with his reading as he loves it anyway.

DD (yr8) has a bit of regular homework from last week that she will get done later today. Won’t take more than 30 mins.

They need a break from the daily grind, as do we all at times!

MrsHamlet · 11/02/2023 16:31

I teach secondary.
Y11 have weekly mimi revision tasks which continue in holiday weeks.
I never set holiday work other than that.

MrsHamlet · 11/02/2023 16:32

Who is mimi? Mini.

Andsoforth · 11/02/2023 16:34

Holidays are for chilling, family time and learning other skills. Definitely no homework or school work.
