Safety in Istanbul following earthquake

Cozytoesandtoast00 · 09/02/2023 12:35

My family and I are due to go to Istanbul in April.
I am petrified of the potential for earthquakes and feeling so upset for the people of Turkey.
I've read that aftershocks and further earthquakes are more likely following a large one along fault lines.
Can anyone tell me if this is true? Would you go to Istanbul so soon?
Thanks

Istanbul is nowhere near where the earthquake occurred 🙄

That would be like not going to London if there had been an earthquake in Aberdeen.

Thanks for your responses. I have a fear of earthquakes after a experience many year's ago, so I'm probably being over cautious.
Apparently, big earthquakes can trigger more along the fault lines. A large fault line leads to Istanbul.
Istanbul is due a huge one and apparently the city is not set up for one.
Some neighbourhoods in Istanbul were sleeping outside through fear of one occuring.

Was chatting to my Turkish barber the other day and the earthquakes are a very long way from any tourist areas. I had asked him if his family were all OK. He showed me a pic of 2 main motorways that had metres wide gaps in them.

Earthquakes are common in Turkey. There was a relatively small one when I visited in 2019 - a popular tourist area nowhere near the epicentre of this weeks quakes. If you are terrified of earthquakes then I don’t think Turkey is the best place to go.

Istanbul is as close to the earthquake epicentre as London is to Frankfurt.

there are earthquakes daily in the uk. There was one this morning in Chelmsford (Essex).

Thank you. That's reassuring.

Tbh I do kind of get where you’re coming from - but you’ll be at the “Radisson” in Istanbul, not tent city by the airport. (I used to live in Istanbul so don’t all jump on me with that statement). Fwiw when I lived there we had a 4.4 and it didn’t even wake me up.

I was in LA in 2014 for work and the first morning I was there they had the biggest quake they’d had in 20 years and I remember thinking “oh for the love of fucking god, my timing is exquisite”. 😂 obviously absolutely everything fine - at some point the west coast will fall into the sea…
