Coke Zero and heart palpitations

MoggyMittens23 · 09/02/2023 11:35

Is it possible that drinking coke zero could be the cause of my heart skipping a beat? Or am i crazy... I really need to quit!

Could it be the caffeine in it?

Runningonjammiedodgers · 09/02/2023 11:36

My dad has a heart condition and heard anecdotally that artificial sweeteners can set it off. He avoids them now and has been feeling much better.

Absolutely, caffeine stimulates the heart.

Yes, due to caffeine. I try to limit coca cola and pepsi in the evening as I struggle to fall asleep

MoggyMittens23 · 09/02/2023 12:04

Thing is I only have one can a day, so it's not like I am having loads. And sometimes I will have the skipped beats a few hours after I have even had any. But it just seem to be the only thing I can think of. Think I'll go a few days without and see what happens

The sweetener Aspartame does this. Is it in the ingredients?

My GP advised it would take 2 years to be fully rid of it when I had problems years ago. Hermesetas Gold was the problem for me.

MoggyMittens23 · 09/02/2023 13:25

@swimlyn it does contain this yes.

2 years???! 😧

Yes, and he was about right with that estimate. I’d swapped to sweeteners to improve my health and was using Hermesetas Gold which I think IIRC is 100% aspartame. As well as palpitations, I was having panic attacks. It’s also known as E951 and AminoSweet.

That worry appears to tie in with @Runningonjammiedodgers post above.

One can a day seems unlikely to be significant though. Maybe check for it in other things you eat/drink? It’s often in sweets/puddings and also sorbets. Sometimes in ice cream.

I guess many other things can encourage palpitations, Hypothyroidism (NOT Hyper…) is one of those things apparently. That can be checked for quite easily.

First of all, don't worry too much, and do what you propose re removing things that you think might cause it, but do go to the Doctors and tell them what you are experiencing because everyone is different and they can check this stuff out fairly easily with ECG etc.. I've got a heart murmur, sarcoidosis and blood pressure issues and I was prescribed bisoprolol (amongst other things that I have been taking a long time). When I first went on the bisoprolol it caused my heart to miss a beat / flutter / thud - it was very noticeable and made me catch my breath when it happened. When I talked to the consultant, he said it was quite common, and I was not to be alarmed, after a few weeks, once I was used to the drug it stopped happening. I have since heard of friends who drink low sugar fizzy drinks having similar, and it has stopped when they have stopped drinking them. I don't have fizzy drinks (often) nor do I drink coffee, but I do love the occasional "sugar free" energy drink with vodka - this makes me feel great at the time, and it is a proper treat, but I'm awful the next day, palpitations, on edge, bad guts the lot, and it is just one can. I'm not sure if it is the caffeine or the sugar free element, but it is evil stuff. Hope this helps. x

Go to your GP

Sofia109 · 11/04/2023 18:13

I have been experiencing palpitations since around the same time as i started to drink Coke Zero - same as you, just one can a day. I used to have the odd can of regular coke and it never caused me an issue - still doesn't today. But the Coke Zero is something else. It can happen anything up to a few hours after, and my heart races as well. I think its all the additives and maybe one in particular - i have stopped buying it now. Hope it improves.

Jb1619 · 22/10/2023 21:30

It has nothing to do with the caffeine! And YES it just about killed me! I have drank plenty of caffeine in coffee and drinks. It's the artificial sweetener it contains 100 % for sure. Like I said after days in the hospital, and lots of tests it was the artificial sweetener in coke zero. Stay away from it.

MoggyMittens23 · 23/10/2023 15:49

@Jb1619 thanks for that! I have been wondering about the caffeine because I don't seem to have that effect on me if for example I am have matcha or tea.

How did they come to that conclusion if you don't mind me asking? Sounds like you were in a very serious situation.

Anyway, I did give up (for the main part!!!) and no longer have any kind of palpitations :)

You can name the sweetener as it is now becoming ‘non grata’ in many countries.

Hermesetas Gold, IIRC was 100% Aspartame. You can still find Aspartame sold neat in W Europe in supermarkets.

In the sugar/sweeteners department…
