Advice for daughter not washing conditioner out of her hair - always looks greasy

Hi

I feel silly posting this but I don't know what to advise. DD13 washes her hair but I am sure she leaves conditioner in it as even post wash it is lank and feels like it is full of product. This happens as soon as it dries so it can't be it getting greasy very quickly as it can't be that quick!

I can't wash it for her obviously so am a bit stuck as she tells me she spends ages getting it out. The length of her showers would support this!

Any ideas of switching shampoo/conditioner etc?

Feels silly but her hair is always not nice and I worry someone will say something. She is not in a good place atm either and very anxious. We have had to get school help from SENCO and more. I have to tread carefully.

Thanks

What about suggesting she swap the product she's using for a spray leave-in conditioner?

It is probably a failure to wash the hair and scalp properly rather than the conditioner. If she is meticulous about shampooing then the conditioner will rinse away fine.

Thanks for all the helpful replies. Am going to switch to a paraben free shampoo and conditioner first (bought today) and then try leave in conditioner and no conditioner if that does not work. Her hair is so thick and knotty that we already also use a leave in condition as no brush will go through it otherwise. Ever tricky.

I have other things to try from this thread if those plans don't work. Really helpful :)

I’m old enough that as a teenager conditioner wasn’t a thing. Id suggest she just leave out the conditioner and see how it goes.

Or use a 2-1 shampoo and conditioner.

Ive had a similar conversation with my Dd who is now an adult and lives away. She says it only happens when she uses our shower. I find it most puzzling.

From a young age my mum said that my hair seemed to be difficult to get wet (I know I don’t really understand it either). But I also use a lot of hairspray. So I shampoo twice to make sure it’s all gone.

Some hair is porus and some is non-porous. You have the latter. Nothing wrong with it.

If you have lots of hair some showers are so pathetically feeble they don't push the water through to the scalp to enable you to properly apply or rinse out the product. I couldn't wash my hair in my old shower for this reason, I had to do it separately leaning over the side of the bath so I could properly get the shampoo into the scalp and properly rinse out the conditioner, by parting my hair in places and sticking the shower hose right in the gap. My new shower has a setting to channel all the water into a smaller much more powerful jet, that works well.

I suspect OPs DD is only washing the outermost layer of hair in the shower, not getting through to the scalp properly so it's a bit greasy still even straight after the shower. Combine that with conditioner not rinsing out properly and you've got rotten hair. Also if it's relevant, you need quite hot water to dissolve dirt and conditioner properly so it's rinsed out. So if you've turned down temperature on things due to cost that could be having an impact on how clean she can get her hair.
