Question is what profession are you if you are working late most evenings?

Im a project manager.

if you aren’t working late most evenings let me know my your job role as I feel like I might change careers lol!

Do you get paid to work late? I often work late if I have things that really need to be done….but always ALWAYS take the time back when it suits me ( like a Friday afternoon)

Picturesonthewall123 · 08/02/2023 22:01

@kitcat15 hahahahahaha I wish! No it’s in our contract that’s it’s expected to work overtime with no additional pay. It’s just how it is. I was just speaking to my manager at 8.30pm this evening for an ad hoc call.

I can't remember the last time I worked past 5pm - most days I'm done at 2 Grin

I'm a dog walker.

Picturesonthewall123 · 08/02/2023 22:06

@coffeecupsandwaxmelts ahh that sounds amazing! I bet it’s lovely being outside with the dogs unless it’s absolutely chucking it down!

What's the reasoning for working so late? Do you have meetings/site visits in the day so admin on the night to catch up?

I'm a sales progressor and never work past 5. I'd love to do something more interesting though!

It sounds like a pretty toxic workplace if that's the company culture and expected of you. Not all workplaces are like that OP!

I almost never work past 5pm (standard office job.) If I can't do my work in my contracted hours then there's an issue with my workload. Funnily enough today an issue cropped up so I did stay late and work til 6pm but will take a long lunch break or go into the office a bit later tomorrow and my boss has no issue with that level of flexibility.

On your deathbed you won't be wishing you'd worked more!

RaininSummer · 08/02/2023 22:32

Blimey. I stay to 5.30 sometimes and otherwise leave at 5. That builds up Flexi which I take later. Civil service. I think I would die within a few weeks of late night like OP describes

Evvyjb · 08/02/2023 22:36

Me too - but I just have to get through to Friday! Off next week but I'll be in on Weds and doing a few hours work. All the best to you!

(Teacher....)

Whendovescry03 · 08/02/2023 22:43

I work in marketing but I'm in a senior role, in charge of a big team and some big clients. So I'll often work the odd evening or a Saturday morning to make sure stuff gets done.

I actually like working the early Saturday mornings as no-one else is online to distract me! But I try to keep my work life balance and I'd never work every evening as there's no need or expectation. It's only when really needed. I only started doing it once I hit a decent level/salary and I wouldn't expect it from the people that I manage.

Tinkeytonkoldfruit · 08/02/2023 22:53

I am a senior manager in social work, I certainly work well above what I'm paid for but I definitely don't work every night and unless we're in periods of significant pressure I try to avoid working at weekends. At one point I was working every evening till 10ish but I realised some of that was habitual. I gave myself a test of one week of not working at all in the evening and guess what the world didn't fall apart.
The ad-hoc calls at 8pm are signs of toxic work environment - the work we do could literally be life and death and yet there is no expectations around that can kind of way of working unless it was a super urgent emergency situation that had to be addressed immediately.

You maybe earn a good salary OP? I’m on 47k pro rata ..l,so definately wouldn’t be doing any extras

Motheranddaughtertotwo · 08/02/2023 23:29

I’m a teacher and work every evening too, it’s shit and my pay is no where near £47k.

Christmascracker0 · 08/02/2023 23:36

I do a lot of overtime for 2 months of the year and a tiny bit of overtime throughout the rest of the year. We don’t get paid for it and it’s in our contracts that you must to do it when required “to meet the needs of the business” 😬

Picturesonthewall123 · 09/02/2023 07:40

Most definitely not on a good wage, I’ve dropped my hours so luckily I don’t work 5 days. Full time salary is probably around 42k so it’s even less than that.

Maybe I do need to get out, it’s just common practice everyone seems to work late so it doesn’t feel abnormal

Morning all. I do work late soem days and weekends. This is my 21st day of working today. I'm a University Lecturer in my first year as a Lecturer. I knew the workload would be high. But it's extremely high during this time. Marking and planning for lectures and I am writing for new units. They have also said I need to do my PGCE for Higher Education so I am also completing a qualification of my own aswell.

Looking forward to taking most of July and August off though. I do take long lunches where I can and make sure I do something for me on the weekend days that I am working.

I previously worked as a Web Developer and Digital Marketing manager which both required long hours but as a Lecturer I have found the work load even higher.

But I would say teaching my passion is a plus point in all of this and I am up skilling myself aswell.

Beezknees · 09/02/2023 09:01

I work my contracted hours only, no more. I only earn £21k though, rising to £23k in April, so that's probably the compromise.

I'm on £42k pro rata, so about 25k take home and I frequently work late as the grade is seen as a decent salary (professional role).

VogueDarling · 09/02/2023 09:13

Last night my manager wanted to speak to me at 6.30pm that's "late" in my book these days
I am a sales and account manager and the latest I work is 5/5:30 might keep an eye on things till 6pm then switch off till 8am next day
Your full time salary is 42k but work out how many hours your actually doing for your salary it would be best to have boundaries around your hours or find a new job

Greenfairydust · 09/02/2023 09:18

Why on earth would you work extra, unpaid hours every day?

If you are routinely doing this you have an unrealistic workload and work for an organisation that takes advantage of its current employees and is unwilling to hire and pay enough staff to do the job.

I am a senior manager on £45K pro rata and I would never do any unpaid overtime.

JustAnotherMoan · 09/02/2023 09:23

I'm senior IT - I work my contracted hours 8-4 probably 95% of the time. If my workload means that I can't deliver in this time, it gets pushed upwards and I ask which tasks they want me to drop. Not my issue if PMs and senior managers can't plan properly.

catsandkid · 09/02/2023 10:09

I regularly work later in the evenings, but figure this is part of the deal in order to work flexibly. I have 2 small DCs so I usually start work after school run at 9am log off at 5ish and collect kids, do bath, bed etc. then get myself showered and then log back on at 7:30pm to work for an hour or so. I have a bit of a personal rule that I like to down-tools by 9pm to give myself an hour or so to actually unwind and switch off otherwise I can't sleep. I also am strict on restricting calls past 6:30pm. I'm happy to work a bit in the evening, but I dont want to be presenting on Zoom or having work calls way into the evening.

I'm a lawyer so I did kind of sign up to longish hours. It's not always this way though, and as with any job its peaks and troughs. When its really busy I'd rather work an hour and a bit in the evening (comfy in pjs on the sofa!) to clear my emails and give myself a bit of breathing space the next day.

catsandkid · 09/02/2023 10:09

Also don't get paid overtime!

42 is fine.....similar to my 47.....but not for doing any unpaid hours.....thats a massive no no.....in my team we all do lots of little extras....but every single person takes the TOIL back.....I would have to be earning 100k plus to do any unpaid hours......and probably not then because i like to be done at 4.30 ....maybe time to find a new job?
