Any KS2 teachers about?

Dd8 came home with this homework and I'm not sure what method they are teaching to solve the division questions in the middle. She said they have to draw little boxes around them and then move the numbers to get the answer. I never learnt this method and I don't want to confuse her by showing a different way.

I presume it’s H T O tenths columns and then you are moving the numbers to the right to make them smaller so 32 becomes 3 in the ones and 2 in the tenths= 3.2

Tarrarra · 08/02/2023 19:04

I think she means a place value grid. When you divide by 10 the numbers “move” to the right. So 6 becomes 0.6? Instead of 6 ones it is 6 tenths.

If you want me to draw it and post an image, let me know!

It's a place value chart.

62 has 6 Tens and 2 ones.
When we divide by 10 the value of the digits decreases, so you now have 6 ones and 2 tenths.

Happysalley · 08/02/2023 19:08

@QuicheQuoche Ah ok, that's what the boxes are! 🤦‍♀️ I was telling her to just move the decimal point but she got very cross as she wanted the boxes.

A diagram would be much appreciated if you wouldn't mind!

Ah, ok so the numbers move rather than the decimal point. Glad I asked on here and not in real life 🙈

Yup, place value grid. We teach them to move the digits rather than the decimal place as that gives better understanding of the process and the fact that the value of the digit is becoming less as it is being divided.

I had to ask a friend this question and she sent me this - Dd confirmed this is what she's been taught. She's in yr3.

Don't tell her to just move the decimal point!

I'm trying to persuade my friend to make a parents guide to primary maths! She's an ex teacher, sahm as middle child has cerebral palsy. And brilliant at explaining things.

It's an already saturated market.

Oh really @Pinkflipflop85 , because I specifically asked the teacher and he couldn't point me at anything... My maths is not good and methods have changed since I was at school. I don't want my kids to pick up on this.

wineandsunshine · 08/02/2023 19:16

This is when every parent needs a place value slider!

Why don't the government send one to each household 🤣🤣🤣🤣

Kamia · 08/02/2023 19:18

If you go to BBC bitesize there's aa very good diagram.

Thanks everyone! We've cracked it now. How embarrassing to be struggling with 8 years old's homework....

Because 37 means 3 tens and 7 ones: 30 + 7.
When you multiply a multi digit number, you are multiplying by the value that each digit represents individually, as the diagram shows. You are partitioning the number.
