Are there any decent pod coffee machines out there?

I've had a Tassimo and it was rubbish. Expensive pods, doesn't fill the full cup and the drink was always just warm, never hot.

I'd like a new machine but don't know what to get. Anybody have any recommendations? Was looking at Dolce Gusto but not sure.

Nothing too expensive if possible Smile

We’ve got the Smeg Lavazza and it’s lovely. A long coffee fills my half pint mug, and the espresso is really good.

Fizzledaway · 08/02/2023 18:51

Lavazza modo mio - inexpensive but good. Have had mine for years. Only thing is the pods aren’t as widely available

redfob · 08/02/2023 18:58

@WaggyTailsWetNoses What pods do you use in those?

@Fizzledaway Ah thanks, where do you get the pods from?

We were burnt (not literally!) by a few rubbish machines, but the Sage Creatista Plus is amazing. It’s pricey but is cheaper in coloured finishes and is often on offer (but not at the moment). This is the one we have, I think we paid £380: www.johnlewis.com/nespresso-creatista-plus-coffee-machine-by-sage-stainless-steel/p5067057

Either get a bean to cup machine or cafetière. Pods are not good for the environment

I love my dolce gusto. It was £30 off amazon and you just move the switch to make hot water go through and can stop it when it's at your desired level. You can get tons of different capsules and they can be really cheap. You can also recycle capsules with the podback scheme.

I second the Lavazza Modo Mio. Very nice coffee and can get a full cup extra hot. The cheapest way to get the pods is via Lavazza directly with a subscription. I use the compostible pods so eco friendly too.

Toddlerteaplease · 08/02/2023 19:20

Sage creatista uno. I love it!

NameChangingIsAddictive · 08/02/2023 19:23

I had a tassimo and didn't like it either. Also had other similar machines with horrible coffee. I do love my nespresso machine, and it has a good choice of coffee. Failing that, I like decent coffee and a cafetiere. I know bean to cup machines are meant to be the best but they are expensive.

CalistoNoSolo · 08/02/2023 19:25

I have a French hob coffee maker. It's truly excellent, you can vary strength by how much/what type of ground coffee you use. And the used grounds go on the garden so it's pretty eco-friendly. It was also cheap as chips. Pod coffee is very very bad for the planet.

MrsJBaptiste · 08/02/2023 19:26

We've always had a Dolce Gusto as BIL worked for Nestle. Still use it now, get through far too many coffee pods these days...

CalistoNoSolo · 08/02/2023 19:27

This is similar to mine Check this out! amzn.eu/d/hUGgPUe

pawz · 08/02/2023 19:27

I'd recommend the Sage Creatista Pro! Pricey but incredible coffee. Worth it if you're a slave to Starbucks like I was, paid itself off in a few weeks.

Invisimamma · 08/02/2023 19:31

Dolce gusto was shite.

I love my Nespresso machine but only if you buy decent coffee pods, there are some really crap pods on the market.

Tallisker · 08/02/2023 19:33

You can recycle the aluminium pods easily. Hotel Chocolat has a pod emptier which presses out the coffee grounds, then rinse the empty pod(s), squash them into a stack and recycle like you do aluminium drinks cans. Aluminium can be recycled for ever.

Tallisker · 08/02/2023 19:34

And the coffee grounds make great soil conditioner if you have a garden or some plant pots

HighlandCowRose · 08/02/2023 19:35

I have the same machine as gobear it is expensive but they come up on offer regularly.
I had a tassimo before and it wasn't very good.

Artemisty · 08/02/2023 19:36

The answer is no.

Get a stove top if you actually want decent coffee.

Elsiebear90 · 08/02/2023 19:36

Pods are really expensive, it’s much cheaper and the coffee is a lot nicer from a bean to cup machine.

cowsaysmoo · 08/02/2023 19:41

We just got Lakeland's Nespresso compatible pod machine (89quid) and it seems to be good so far (3rd day only though after our Krup Nespresso broke, which I do not recommend as it was replacement already as first one broke too).

Christmascracker0 · 08/02/2023 19:44

I have this one - www.johnlewis.com/nespresso-creatista-plus-coffee-machine-by-sage-black-truffle/black/p3116015?tmad=c&tmcampid=7&s_share=jlappios_Y29tLmFwcGxlLlVJS2l0LmFjdGl2aXR5LkNvcHlUb1Bhc3RlYm9hcmQ=

but it’s really not necessary to spend so much 😅 I do love the Pret Nespresso pods though.

SlightlyJaded · 08/02/2023 19:45

Hated our Nespresso - expensive, weak coffee. Changed it to the Nespresso Vertuo (bigger pods) and it's immeasurably better. Still not as good as a pot on the hob but for a quick pod cover, the nicest I've tasted (I like strong, rich coffee with a big crrema top)

Colourinsidethelines · 08/02/2023 19:46

We’ve got a lavazza modo mio as well. It’s really good. The coffee is really nice. We subscribe to the pod delivery as that works out cheapest for the pods.
